Ok I have 18x8 wheels on my a6. I'm hoping to fit wider tires for stock class. Is a 275/35/18 too big to squeeze onto my puny 8" wheels?

I know that some auto cross 265/35 on 19x8s on the front of a genesis. 275/35 don't sit we'll on thier 19x8.5 rears. I'm not sure on 18's.

I wouldn't go less then 8.5s for 265s. The 265s on 9s for the stx car is a tough squeeze. 255s are probably a way better option. Especially for a street car.

I can't get 255/37/18 for daily use. I guess I'll look at stock size... My problem is I need a dual purpose tire so a higher tread wear rating is a must. I was hoping a wider tire would negate some lacking in grip associated with higher compound tires.

Are you looking at an A6/V710 type tire, or a street tire? If a street tire I'd roll with a 265 and just know that they'll be a bit of sidewall bulge. For reference, I've ran 245's on a 7 in street tire trim along with 255's on an 8 and both were fine.
If you talking A6's, then that's another ball game. I currently have 315's squeezed onto an 8 inch rim for the FS car. Took me about 45 minutes to mount all 4, but they work well.
