I'm looking for some type of car to dedicate as a track car and do autocross with. I've started to run across some older Arca/Bush/Nascar cars and has got me thinking they may be fun as a dedicated, double duty track car.
The question I'm not sure of is though, what class would one of those cars have to compete in?
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks

FYI for anybody else interested, called and spoke with Doug in Tech as SCCA Headquarters. He stated to run in CP.

No matter what car you pick, I think you are going to find that the setups for autocross and the track are dramatically different. Autocross turns are just so much slower than most track corners it takes a different setup to make the car handle like you would like. So much so that unless you want to do an alignment on the car and other changes every time you switch between autocross and track day you will have to compromise with one or the other. Probably best to run the track setup at autocross as an autocross alignment on the track will probably eat tires quicker. I found this out when trying to autocross my F600 as well as race it. The F600 is only for the track now and I autocross my street car.

Interesting concept... an old stock car at an AutoX. It seems an almost ridiculous car to AutoX, but on the other hand it seems like it could be INCREDIBLE fun on the bigger courses we do at ZMax The people that can probably answer all of your questions and much more are the V8 Stockcar.com guys. They have a forum at v8stockcar.com/forum/index.php but I don't know how active it is. Good luck... can't wait to see it if you go through with this!

Unless it is based on a production car chassis, it should be one of the mod classes.

I scanned through the rules and unfortunately, the only class I see for it would be AM (assuming this is a full on modern tube frame car and isn't built on any portion of a production car chassis). All other potential classes require retaining some portion of the production car chassis, including DM and EM. While it would be fun, running in AM would put you racing against yourself in AM or horribly out paxed in Pro. I assuming you wouldn't even consider running it in tire class!

I think DM/EM allow for tubeframe cars, which a stockcar would be. DM is < 2000cc, EM is > 2000cc

Pretty sure C/P allows tube frame cars. Think a better (and less expensive) fit would be a legends car.

If SOLO is your primary focus, then a full bodied Cup car would be, well... challenging. If you wanted to do Hillclimbs and TT and maybe some land-speed stuff- then HECK YEAH! Current record at the Silver State classic is held by a guy in an 06 Dodge Cup Car.

DM is < 2000cc, EM is > 2000cc I read through the rules again and I think you are correct Duck as they do mention GT cars are allowed. They are listed under modified tub. There are some strict rules though reading through the modified tub section regarding the dimensions. Someone would have to go over the car with a tape measure to make sure it met those rules.

Yeah, I started thinking about this one and remembered seeing "EM" on the side www.scca.com/news/index.cfm?cid=46249

I know the owner of that car. Some might scoff at the Jeep body, but reading through the rules brings up some points that make it a good choice regarding the dimensions, especially wheelbase.
