Day 4 (Monday 25th)
Woke up at 6:50 being 10 minutes ahead of alarm. First email I saw was a Triad Sports Car Club Happy birthday greetings, shortly thereafter my father called from Sweden, then my mother, my daughters and then my sister. My wife who is Sweden right now had called earlier. Then John Byrd called with what sounded like the rest of the CCR club members in Charlotte signing happy birthday over the cell phone. Coming back to the hotel checking the forum I got overwhelmed with all birthday wishes… I don’t think I have ever gotten this many birthday wishes previously. Thank you so much… I certainly don’t need to get any older, but I don’t mind as long as I drive Autocross.
Now back to business. Chilly morning at 47F and clear skies. Slight breeze which increased as the day went on and got rather strong in the afternoon. The temperature came all the way up to upper 70ies and the wind was less bothersome as the air temperature was warm. I think they should plant power generating windmills instead of wheat in all of Kansas that would probably power the entire planet, but on the other hand we may become short of bread. Anyway, I left the hotel at 8:10 and arrived at the site at 8:25. By the way, the site guarded around the clock and open 24 hours a day. Basically, Monday was a day of walking the courses and make final preparations to get ready for the competition on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The East and West courses were already laid out and drivers were walking the courses when I arrived. I started to walk both courses for a first look. I was surprised how nicely they were laid out each cone was with a number designation with spray painted in green on the asphalt. I liked the course designs too. The cones and directional cones positions were spray painted in yellow. A couple of holes in the asphalt was cemented and dried during the day. Three industrial strength blowers on wheels were used to clean the course from sand. Very professionally done. Very nice not having to be out there with brooms… As the wind picked up it looked like some of that sand was blowing around. The nice and fat chalk lines were started to drift with the wind which looked like drifting snow in the winter time. This reminded me about the winters in Sweden. I was surprised how long the courses were. The East Course is 3,333 feet being more than 500 feet longer than Lowes and about 400 feet longer than Danville which is the longest course I have measured thus far. The East course is shorter and came in at 2,970 feet, but still a long course. I was pleased. By the way I met another sane person when I walked the course. You will understand when you will see the photos. The coming photos will reveal the truth. The surface is problem, but it is the same for everybody. I think those who ran the ProSolo events will have an advantage in how to master the surface. The warmer weather may help everybody a bit as well. The staging is long and straight almost to a point you need to slow down before you trip the starting sensors at least on the East course. I am running East course in Heat 3 tomorrow and will work in Heat 5. Heat 3 is expected to begin around noon. This is nice schedule. I will run the West course on Wednesday with the same schedule.

I was able to hook up with most of all the Carolina drivers today as the photos will tell. The Triad club has a very strong representation, with all of the Teglers (Chuck, Catherine & Chris), David O’Malley, Anthony and Susan Hodges, Justin Barbry… I also ran in to Donna and Charles Frank late in the day. They had participated in the ProSolo earlier. Unfortunately their Celica started to make familiar transmission noises and Charles had to swap cars in the last ProSolo run. Charles will now co-drive the Mini of Charleston sponsored Mini Cooper together with Donna Frank and Jeff Jacobs in HS and HSL. They hope the Toyota will make it back to NC after the Nationals. Dr. Zimmer walked the courses with some of us provided some important pointers. I must have walked the East course at least 10 times and West course about 5 times.

There was a lot of walking today and I can now see why drivers bring bicycles, mopeds, golf carts and even a tri-cycle (with a motor). The photos will tell.

Day 5 (Tuesday 26th)
Woke up at 5:10 being 1 hour and 30 minutes before the alarm. Clear skies with 49F in the morning and must have been in the low eighties in the afternoon. In other words, a very nice day for auto crossing. Tara arrived late last night as you can see from one of the photos. Steven and Jonathan picked her up at the KC airport. About 600 drivers raced today for a total of 1,800 runs split on East and West courses. I, Steven Rankins, Jonathan McCallister and Tara ran the East course. Chuck & Catherine Tegler, David O’Malley and Jun Yang from Triad ran the West course. At the end of the day Tegler’s in laws had come up from Texas with their motor home and invited all the Carolinians for a barbecue party. Basically all of us got beaten badly. The lonesome star of the day was Jun Yang who ran a 52.3 and placed 12th in BS running his Nissan 350Z being only two places away from the trophies. Of course GH Sharp also running East Course were in the trophies barely in 9th place running a Boxster S in AS. As you have already seen I finished in the bottom half in 22nd place and 2.2 seconds off best time in G-Stock. I could perhaps find another second, but finding 2.2 seconds would be a monumental task. All I can say there were some incredible good drivers in GS and in all other classes for that matter. I did not drive too bad it was just that the others were all that much better. I really enjoyed it, but unfortunately we did not have good spectator areas. My best time was a 56.4. Steven’’s best was a 55.7 in 17th place in STU, McCallister best was a 57.6 in 36th place in STU. Tara I don’t know other than she told me she did not do well. GH Sharp best was a 52.8 in 9th in AS. David O’Malley best was 51.9 in 20th place and Chuck Tegler best was a 55.2 in 28th place. Catherine best was 53.6 in 5th place in smaller ladies field.

By the way, in impound I learned that that my Mini was technically not legal in GS along with a few others. We all had to take off the wheels on one side and stabilize the car on jack stands for inspection. It turns out there is suppose to be a small “rubber shield” mounted at the bottom of the rear shocks. These rubber shields should have been moved from my stock shocks to the Koni shocks at installation. This was missed when the Konis were installed by Mini of Charleston. At first I had no earthly idea what they were talking about as this was news to me. Apparently the rubber shields serve little purpose plus the shield covers the adjustment screw, but they need to be there. I learned something new. I believe this may have been protested against some other drivers in GS who were in the trophies and since I was not even close it may not matter all that much and it will be hard to get in to the trophies tomorrow anyway. It would have been really bad if I had been in the trophies dealing with this nuisance matter…

I will see if I can get closer to the leaders tomorrow…

Please note my new friend is very respectable driver from California who drives a stunning Porsche 911 GT2 in ASP and understands the importance to measure the course…
