Alright guys, my project to switch a dirt street stock into a pavement pounding solo car is going well, but I have a couple questions for you experts.
1. In general, what should my minimum ride height be? Is 3 or 4 inches of clearance reasonable?
2. If you had your choice, what gears would you guys use? I have a 6.20 right now, but I'm worried it might be a bit steep. I have a standard chevy 3 speed and want to race in 2nd and 3rd while staying below 6,000 rpm in third.
Also, if anyone knows of an old (80-88) monte sitting in the barn that need its body cut off, I'd appreciate if you could let me know.

I don't think I can answer it all for you but here are a few thoughts from my perspective: 1. My Fiesta has a minimum ride height of just over 2 inches. Your car is longer and a higher height may be in order, but I have dragged bottom at only one course. 2. Hard for me to translate gearing without tire diameter, etc. But, gear it for highway speeds to perfrorm well at an autocross. If you think you will do HPDE or time trial events, you may want to be a bit taller, but I would certainly try the 6.20 gearing for the first event or so. Most of us run our events in 2nd gear. I sometimes get to 3rd, but that is with 20-inch tires on a little Furd Fiesta E-Prep.
Finally, sorry - but if I run into an old Monty...my wifey wants it and I have a lil 400 smallblock from Hendrick m.s. to go in it....I only race a Furd cuz they is cheap....I really love Chevies.

Thanks, I think I'll try the 6.20 for sure. I just need to scare up a locker to replace the locked spool thats in there now.
2" seems a bit extreme for the Monte. My car is a little longer and about 4 metric tons heavier than a Fiesta, so I think we'll start around 4" and see if we can get away with lower. Trouble is, the exhaust is the lowest point, so if I bottom out, it will rip the pipes off. Maybe I'll weld a little "ski" on each side forward of the pipes on each side and put some stiff springs in.
