Okay. After changing the timing belt and the waterpump in my miata, I suddenly have a new relatively high pitch whining noise coming from my engine. I have checked my belt tensions and they seem to be ok. Do waterpumps need to be broken in? It sound like I have a supercharged mini cooper engine under my hood. Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, double check the part numbers when napa gives you a power steering belt. Save your self a trip midway through the job. Also, try not to break off a valve cover bolt in the head during reassembly. It creates a whole new PITA.

Water pumps do not need broken in. It may well be a belt noise.
To find out.......While the engine is running, CAREFULLY, apply a belt dressing, or hold a piece of chalk to the belt, or even spray a small amount of water on the belt. If it is actually a belt noise, the noise should go away.
If it doesn't go away, it could quite possibly be a bearing noise from another element that is on that belt routing.

Fun isn't it Clark? Also, make sure you don't snap the thermostat housing in half on reassembly!!! 12 ft.-lbs. is about as much force as you can do with a pinky finger on a shorty socket!
Could it be the bearing in the timing belt auto-tensioner? I've heard of them going out on miatas, so guys will change that pre-emptively with a timing belt change........I'll get that on my next one.

One other thing to check Clark.
Look under the hood and make sure that Boner is not there!!!! (Good source of whining)

Wow, that was a good one. No, seriously, a fine fine piece of ZING and you should be commended for your efforts. Thank you, and keep up the good work.
Shorty.

Okay, the alternator belt is about as loose as it can be without slipping. Heck, I'm surprised it's not slipping. The noise is still there. Despite, the supercharger whine, I can't feel an extra 50 hp. I kinda feel cheated.

if the t-belt is too tight it can make the noise you are hearing

Maybe you need some cheese to go with that whine (wine).
