During the off-season some of us had conversations about how to get people more interested in traveling to events. We’ve worked with Triad Sports Car Club to come up with the inaugural NC Solo Cup Tour to encourage that travel from both clubs’ members as well as anyone else looking to expand their horizons and have a little friendly goofy competition.
The 2013 season will include 8 events with 2 drops. Each club’s schedule will have 4 events declared as tour points events. Nothing changes in the event at all... we just do some tallying after the fact. Participation is completely voluntary. Schedules will be announced soon.
Teams will consist of 6 people, and everyone is free to form teams as they see fit. Everyone at any skill level and any level of car prep is welcome and WILL have a role to play on the team. Scoring will be done in 3 brackets.... 1-30th place, 31-60th place, and 61-90th place, with the first position in each class worth 30 points counting down to 1 point for the final place in the bracket. The top driver on the team in each bracket earns those points for the team. If no driver from a team falls in that bracket, no points are scored from it.
For example, a team whose members finish 10th, 23rd, 33rd, 42nd, 44th, and 80th would score as follows:
10th place - top driver in A bracket - 21 points
33rd place - top driver in B bracket - 28 points
80th place - top driver in C bracket - 11 points
Team total for event - 60 points
A “stacked” team where drivers finish 3rd, 8th, 16th, 22nd, 26th, and 30th would score:
3rd place - top driver in A bracket - 28 points
no driver in B bracket - 0 points
no driver in C bracket - 0 points
Team total for event - 28 points
This is intended to be a fun way to A) encourage a little more friendly competition, B) encourage travel to run and meet other clubs in the area, and C) hopefully lead to some driver development through mentoring and instruction by getting inexperienced drivers on teams with more experienced “fast guys”. It is NOT a SRS BZNS competition with cash prizes or contingencies. The prizes are going to be chosen by me and based on my warped sense of humor and worth literally dozens of cents each. We know with this format some people are going to get extremely lucky by placing 31st instead of 30th or completely screwed by placing 30th instead of 31st. It is what it is, and sometimes luck just isn’t on your side... but a bracketed system makes it possible for EVERYONE to be able to contribute.... even those amongst us who hate the PAX system entirely. It is also not meant to be a “club vs club” competition like NCAC. Teams can be members from any club, as long as they’re willing to do a little bit of traveling for events.
So with that said, I’d like to encourage everyone to get a team together and participate in this. I know I’ve heard people saying they want more variety of sites... they want more competition... they want more seat time. Whatever it is you want, this is your chance to get it. I’m looking forward to seeing what this season holds and hoping we can get some people involved. Right now both CCR and TSCC both have a handful of people that travel to events regularly, and both CCR and TSCC would like to see that number grow. It makes us stronger as a club and as individual drivers.
