I said that I would work with novices at the 1st event too, but I ran group 1 and worked 3, when the huge pro group was running. The worker steward said that no instructors were needed and I wound up shagging cones. What should I do to make sure that I am helpful? How are novices being assigned instructors?

I dont see instructing novices as a job , more just giving back to the club to insure it will be around for awhile.

And a friend of mine is gonna be there as a Novice, so I can ride with him, but he's in a Mustang, so someone that drives RWD would be good to ride along w/ him, too.

Go ahead and put me down for novices and safety, among others. I may or may not be driving so that may have me free for all four (or however many) run groups

Well the bigger point to novice instructing is helping them find their way around course and basic driving tips. Be sure they use proper seating and hand positions, get through the course clean and safe. Usually adjusting braking points and turn in, along with getting back to the throttle appropriately is enough instruction.

Actually, he can't go this Saturday, but I rode w/ a novice at the last event and did exactly what you talked about. Ended up saying giving one-two/short verbal instruction as we went through the course and worked great. We also went over the map between runs once he realized where he was going which was HUGE help, but then his car oil starved, so he called it a day. Another thing I didn't realize is the sun's position in the sky helps make things more confusing. Sun in eyes and a sea of cones is fairly overwhelming. We may want to consider that when making run groups and when the novices run.

Try road racing with it.group 1/2 at Road Atlanta T1 is TERRIFYING!!!

Experiencing the sun first hand in turn 12 during the start of a group 1 ARRC race in my F600 I can testify to how terrifying it is. The sun ends up almost right behind the starter stand. Had the darkest tint visor on and it was no help. The starter becomes just a black vague shadow shape. Good luck even trying to make out the starter throwing the flag. The closer to the front of the field the worse it is. If your towards the back of the field and coming down the hill your sight line to the starter is better.
