Memorial Day Track TrialThis will be our inaugural Track Trials event. We will be running on the Carolina Motorsports Park East course, since the CCR will be running an autocross on the west course. Passing with point by will be allowed in three separate zones that are outlined in the supplemental regulations. This event is being capped at a limited number of entrants, so track densities should be very low. Five 20 minute sessions are planned for each group. This is a great way to get seat time for a very low entry fee. For those not familiar with the SCCA Track Trial rules, a FAQ can be found here: Track Trial FAQVolunteers are needed! No experience is neccesary. If you are interested in helping out, we would love to have you at the event. Worker perks will be given. Please contact me with any questions about the event at joe@scsportscar.com

Congratulations to TJ Theodore for winning in the 10 car deep CSP field yesterday. From looking at the results quickly, it looked like the top 7 CSP cars were separated by only one second. I had a great time, even though I hit a tire wall. I hope that everyone else had as much fun as I did. We'll be at Roebling on June 27 and 28th for our first SCR-SCCA two day points Track Trial event. We also are scheduled to offer a PDX at this event.

Great job... Special thanks again to Nick, Matt and "Dirk" for all their hard work! ;D ;D ;D Note : "THE WINGS AND THINGS GROUP WILL SPIN. ALOT!!!" - Quote Posted by tirewarmer on May 18, 2009, 8:54am Joe, I didn't spin all day. I ran out of gas, I popped a radiator hose ring clamp but no spins ...and the tire wall monster left me alone. He must have been hungry for Olives...

I wanted to let you guys know I had a great time Monday. This was my first TT/Racing event and i cannot wait for more. Big thanks to Joe for helping me get started and for all the gear questions i asked him over a 2 week period. He basically helped me get started. Thanks to John for looking after me and schooling me about my 360 in the wet during my first session. He is a great teacher and very helpful instructor. Also thanks to Matt and Nick for all their help, and signing me off for my first Novice TT! From the stories i heard about past SCCA TT events this one was miles ahead of those. The format was great. i was on track with 9 cars for my group and never had any problems giving/getting a pass-by sign. The other drivers were cautious and curteous beyond anything i ever expected. Thanks to all those guys for allowing me to share the track with them. I must have pulled 70-80 laps...WELL worth the money and time for everyone. The wife and I will see all of you all at Roebling next month!!! Eddie Bassett (White BMW in case you were wondering) BTW will final results for all sessions be posted? Thanks!

It was a fun event, though the high humidity got old kinda fast. Congrats to TJ on the CSP win. Sessions 4 and 5 were fun. Session 3 was an ice rink...LOL

I agree that session 4 and 5 were fun, and about session 3, ice rink is an understatement. I have a miata and couldnt touch the gas on exit.

Wasn't at the TT for comparison, but ask Ted, TJ, Jeremy, and others about how slick the mountain was in the wet at Wolf Ridge this year!

There's a very scientific system in MMFD (Motorsports Meteorological Fluid Dynamics) explaining water on track ... #1. semi damp... you see wet and gray spots #2. damp... you see all dark wet... no gray spots #3. active rain... rain is falling and course is all dark #4. rain with standing water... you see puddles #5. heavy rain... you can't see puddles only because the entire surface is standing water THEN there's #6. heavy rain on a hillclimb.... where the water that wants to puddle is coming down hill looking for a low spot while you are going up hill looking for a high spot and the blend of both is slicker than Owl snot mixed with vaseline and those stringy things that come off of banannas. You can almost hydroplane sitting still with your foot on the brakes. See? I told you it was scientific.

That was what was so strange, it had started to dry and didn't look that bad.
Looked like a 2.5 on Ted's scale, but WAY slipperier than the #5 conditions from session 2.
For me, the new paving in the carousel had NO grip during that session, and I saw a lot of the side of Coty's Miata while following him through there, so it wasn't just me.

Example of the session 3 "ice rink" filmed from Coty's Miata: (It was just uploaded, so it may take a while for the HD version to appear.) D'oh!

Yeah...it was crazy slick. Glad you got to check out the side of my car in the carousel Matt <grin> Each time around I swear it got more and more sideways even though I was trying to take it easy....I kept looking at the corner workers expecting them to send me in My favorite was the dog that was on the side of the track on the back straight at the end of session 5. Truk41...what happened there? When I go there you were slowed and Chris was over in the grass?? We beat feet after that session and I did not get to see you or Chris to find out what happened... Repeating the earlier question: Where are the results going to end up?

Chris, Me and TJ were running inline for a few laps maybe 10 car lengths between each of us and on exit of the turn Chris turned hard right, off line, and got hard on the brakes. At first I was thinking he was going to point me by, but he was leaving the 'line' so I was going even more to the right of him. It was at that time I saw the dog entering the 'line' I locked up the brakes to avoid Chris and the dog, and I really dont know what TJ did behind us. Chris's car stalled, and rolled into the grass. Then we just all pulled into the paddock. It was kind of unfortunate because I was having a blast, running with Chris and TJ for many laps trying to gain a little bit each corner, then overdrive it, and go at it agian. I did get a chance to do it again in the following session, with TJ an Mark, but we were farther apart, proabably 5 or so second between us. I will say that it is amazing how different each car is as far as engine size, intake setup, suspension, tire compound, and tire size and to all be that close in times.... Of the few TT's I have done in the past 2 years, this was the most fun I had. Maybe because it was non-points, maybe one day, no hotel, close to home, not enough down time between sessions , or NUMBER OF FAST CSP cars....either way great time. Good job to all that made this happen...Now to recruit more CSP cars. PS. if anyone has pictures or video of me running, let me know. even if it is just a few seconds of video from an in-car that is fine. I will one day buy another camcorder, since mine died at Nashville last year.

I'll post when they are up.

Does anyone have footage of a few laps around the track with the configuration we used?

We should have results available shortly (either tonight or sometime tomorrow). My apologies for the delay.
We really appreciate everyone coming out, and we hope you all had a good time. If you liked the format, we hope you'll tell others about our future events. These events will also have PDX, which is SCCA's name for a track day, so anyone interested in trying out driving on track can get in-car instruction in a non-timed, non-competitive environment.
Additionally, our future events are both SEDIV TT points events.
They are:
June 27-28th at Roebling Road near Savannah, GA.
August 16th back at CMP in Kershaw, SC on the full course.
I'd be remiss if I didn't thank the workers for the wonderful job they did. We had a fantastic crew, and it's because of them that the event ran as well as it did.
Additionally, Brian Smith at CMP said they are going to install a permanent timing loop for the east course, so that will be good for future events on that configuration.
If you've got any suggestions for future events or any questions about how you can get involved in PDX or Time Trials, please email me or Joe at matt@scsportscar.com and joe@scsportscar.com respectively.
Thanks, and I hope to see you all at Roebling next month!

I will one day buy another camcorder, since mine died at Nashville last year. I think I have some video of you passing me. If I confirm I do, I'll post it. EDIT: It turns out I had my focus settings wrong so my in-car video is blurry.

Would you believe a Microsoft Office 'autocomplete' for CSP?
Aaaaaand that is why they are 'unofficial'! I'll fix that tonight.

I ran a Spec Miata on the short course in 05 with old RA-1's and turned a 102.717. That would have placed me middle of the CSP field....got to get a car ready!
