If you have shorter runs you can have more. Say on a 35 second course you could have 4-5 runs as suposed to 3-4 runs on a 45 second course. Yes, no? Depends on the course design. You can't run cars too closely on a short course, or the workers get runover while trying to shag cones. I'd rather get three 55s runs than eight 25s runs. I like to keep the launching to a minimum.

I wish I could have made it to the greensboro race, but I have to see the kids at least one weekend a month! Wish I had seen the other beetle out there. What was it? Did anyone else see it? What's their website so I can check how it did and compare. Thanks all.
I like times in the 40-50 range like we did at knights last time. Lots of different things out there. Although I did get lost in the sea at the end of the course. More flour? Glad someone pointed it out to me! Anyone going to Florence on the 23rd?

I have autocrossed in a dozen different regions and had hundreds of different opinions about the courses and organization, etc. I like ANY course that gets thrown at me unless it has:
1. Hairpins where you have to slow down to baby-crawling pace 2. Down-and-back "bacon strips" with nothing but Chicago boxes and slaloms
Personally, green cones, chalk lines and timeslips are things that help noobs and I am OK with them. Chalk lines don't help me on course as much as when I'm walking. Sometimes the timeslips hold up cars getting out of the finish area, but most people with a head on their shoulders get out of the way if a car is approaching whether they get their slip or not.
When I first read Adam's comments about "minimalistic" I was thinking to myself "PUHLEEZE", but now that I think about it, I agree. Too many cones can confuse noobs and looking ahead becomes difficult. But hey, I love a challenge!

I like a challenge too, but I'm bad with directions. For that reason, lots of cones that make it easy to see where to go, works well for me.

Thats true, especially with your AWD car. For me short or long will work, I'll have fun no mater what

I'm more or less still a noob, but I liked the amount of cones. I said it before, it was because they were only plentifull on the outside edge of the turn, not the inside. I found it helped as the singel lone cone was most likely my apex. Still, I never got lost on the ccr course until last time, at the finish line. Next time I'll do a better walk through.

Yup. A good walkthrough is always helpful.

I found the walk through to be EXTREMELY valuable!

I walked through only 1 1/2 times on Saturday, and got lost twice. On Sunday I walked through at least 4 times, and never got lost.

Hey, dangyankee38, just FYI, you can edit your previous posts instead of posting another 1 minute later.. (or maybe you're cleverly covering up some double-posting action? ) Yeah, the first couple autocrosses, you're walking through to memorize the course so that you don't DNF every time. After a while you learn where the course goes on the first walkthrough and then start to look for where to go faster on each consecutive walkthrough. It takes a long time to estimate the speed that your car might have through certain turns.. I'm almost always wrong, but I try to listen to what more experienced autocrossers have to say during their walkthroughs.

Sorry, not trying to double post ( I only do that in the POST HO THREAD).
Just another thought after I've hit the "Post Reply" button. Never thought of editing. Thank you.
My apologies

Yep - which is why the Hughes Novice book and Ed's novice notes recommend taking a notebook and sketching out the course so you can run it thru even a feeble old brain (like mine) when you are done with your walk thrus. I intend to do more of that this year. I haven't had a DNF from getting lost on course in several years until the last Triad event and then I had one - even though I walked the course several times. So, from now on - more walk thrus, more "memory" walk thrus, more notes.....tape a map to the dash.....get a navigator, GPS ;D.... whatever it takes... Also, double posting when you have an additional BrainF*rt is allowed...screen space is free... ;D. If ya wanna edit that is fine too.

I wish we could find a way for those of us that work tech to get more than one or two walks. It's rather annoying... Yeah, I'm complaining...

Back when I was a kid, we only got ONE walk through and that's the way we liked it. And it wasn't always in the right direction either. Did I ever tell you about the time in '72 when we raced in TWO directions at once !? I volunteer to tech my own car if that will help! ;D I'll just let you know when I pull up if it passed or not.... Seriously, when I get a little more no-how, I'll help with it. Know what I mean?

Lagooney...I can help with Tech if I don't get corraled at registration. Looks like we need a third person there to help with walkups, unless we get a higher percentage of preregs. Like I said last night, now that I have a dedicated autocross car, I just kick it off the trailer and slap on magnets. Hopefully we will have some additional annual tech stickers and we can get to where the only cars needing tech are the new ones.

I have a question about the annual tech. Last CCR event, whoever was doing tech asked if I was an SCCA member, and gave me a sticker for my car when I said yes. Does that mean I don't have to get teched at CCR events any more?

Yup yup yup. that is what that means...it is a highly prized honor provided only to cars of unquestionable character and quality (like Fiestas).
It also saves a LOT of time for the TechGuys at future events. But, if you make changes in cars or significant changes to your current machine (that can affect safety) you should return to Tech again.

Thanks. I just wanted to check since nobody said anything about it at the autocross beyond "here's a sticker", and the website has no details. Glad to know it works nearly the same as SCR.

Bottom line, Matt.
If you're and SCCA member, and you have proven over time that you consistently bring cars to tech that pass and are competition worthy, you can get a sticker.
Much like SCR.

I guess that means you shouldn't be banned from annual tech - VWs should be.

True story: I dumped 3quarts of local "stuff" out after I moved from my apt to my first house. Grass did not grow there for 2 years. It was down hill in a perfect tear drop shape. People drink it why?
Shake it, fast bubble demise, high power stuff.
