Hello CCR,
The Evolution Performance Driving Schools are an excellent way to improve your skills. For both those who are experienced and those who are new these driving schools are guaranteed to improve your lap times more than thousands of dollars in upgrades to your car. Unfortunately at present there are no plans for any Evo schools in the central Carolina region this year. I am posting this message to gauge interest in the school and also to see which type of Evo school most people want to take.
Last year, at the urging of Dave McKenzie, Steven Rankins put together two Phase 1 Evo schools on a saturday and sunday at the end of May. Jinx Jordan and Rob Falkner were the instructors. If you are new and don't know who these two are you may have seen Jinx and his wife Ginette driving their Honda Civic in FSP and Rob Falkner (with Wade Carpenter co-driving) driving his Porsche Boxster 550 limited edition in AS. They are both phenomenal drivers and teachers. Sufficed to say the schools were extremely successful. If we are lucky we will be able to get one or both of these guys to teach locally again soon.
Here is a description of the phase 1 and phase 2 schools:
Phase 1 (link to the main website):
There is a short challenging course that crosses itself 3 times so 4 separate segment times can be compared to see where you are losing/gaining time. No cone penalties are counted against you.
You get one on one time with each instructor. You will be driving your car with your instructor riding along, riding along as your instructor shows you how to drive your own car and driving solo while your instructor watches. There are also group segments where the instructors will teach the core concepts you will be working on during the school. The first half of the school involves the basics of car control and placement on course. The second half of the school is all about looking ahead which is the single most important thing to learn as a novice.
Phase 2 (pasted from the main website):
Building upon the skills learned in Phase 1, Phase 2 takes the driver into new areas of mental race preparation, allowing the Phase 1 skills to be applied as second nature. Various driving exercises are conducted throughout the day to improve the driver’s visual and mental imaging of the course, resulting in quicker lap times. This course has worked "magic" in reinforcing the importance of Phase 1 skills and transferring those skills to every autocross course you may encounter. The Phase 2 track design is not the same as used in Phase 1 and generally has higher speed sections.
The schools go about as long as a normal autocross and the cost is somewhere around $240 each.
I took the phase 1 school last year after only starting autocross for the first time the previous month. I went from middle of the pack in novice class to first place almost every time. If you are a person who loves autocross, loves the competition and wants to get serious about winning this school is the most cost effective first step in that pursuit. Well, it's the most cost effective next to the CCR novice school that is held once per year .
Now that I've sufficiently pitched the school, please vote on which type of school you are most interested in. It is a requirement for phase 2 to have taken the phase 1 course. For experienced drivers I think a special exception can be made to that rule so they can skip to phase 2. Also, if you know someone who is interested but is unwilling or unable to sign up on the forum to post about it please post for them so we can get an accurate tally going.
Personally I'd love to do a phase 1 and a phase 2 the next day if possible so if we get enough people interested in both we may do that.
I know that scheduling is the big issue. I will be posting again soon about some possible dates for the school(s).
