OMFG where do I start with this....... 1. Quite a few of us were there. 2. Tara does like all the traction she can get 3. Compared to an M roadster or some other cars that are presently out there, a MINI is pretty inexpensive. I bought mine brand new for 22.8K and have less than $1500 of mods into it total including wheels and tires to make it reasonable competitive. 4. Better buy one soon if you are going to get a new one before the new 2007 version comes out. I predict it will not be as good of an autocross car. 5. That usually doesn't take much 6. 7. There are younger/faster/more single MINI instructors than Per Olof. He was lucky enough to grow up in Sweden, so he has been spoiled enough. 8. I agree completely. You are more than welcome to take my MINI for a run at the 24 hours. 9. Party in my hotel room at the 24 hours. 10. Anyone want to let me drive a fast car so that I can get PAX and Raw FTD at the 24? You must be the guy with the Red Mini Cooper with the cherkered flag top. That car is sooooo cute!!!!!! You'll have to take me for a ride in it sometime. Red is my favorite color, and I'm really interested in MCs. Hahaha, he's the guy with the black mini cooper. Him and Per (the guy who owns the red one you speak of) are usually the pax class killers.

Soooooooo......with all of that, what kind of car do I get? Budget? Older Miatas are under $3000 with 100,000+ miles in decent shape.

I really do like Miatas, but on the used car market that I have seen, I'm really finding a lot of Minis that I like, and I am not sure I would trust myself with a 100,000 mile car. I am not very mechanical. I understand the difference in the MC and the MC S, but which would be better for autocrossing? I hear people say the S model has a lot more horse power, so why do people say the non-S model would also be good too?

Well my Miata is a 1994 and has 190,000+ miles. I've had to do some work (clutch, brakes, timing belt, top). The only two major things were a transmission ($200 from a wreck) and a new wheel bearing (install is tomorrow). I wouldn't be afraid to drive it across the country after the bearing is done.
That said, I really like the Minis!! Since they don't run in the same class for AX, one isn't really better than the other. The MC will ride better on the street, the MCS will handle better because of the stiffer suspension.
Best bet, go test drive some cars! That's always a fun thing to do!! And come to the 24, you can get rides in just about everything, and drive a lot of other cars too!!

Gigi, if you check back, the Nomaro is a serious offer. A great first auto-x car. Sorta like swinging 3 bats before walking to the plate. PLUS am a fair instructor imho. James That's sweet. Thank you, soloracer. I just don't like Camaros. I had a real bad experience in one. ...was it of the dark nite, dirt road, back seat variety, or just a mechanical?

Get anything that you really enjoy driving. key is to ge out and have fun. We'll stick you in a class somewhere. Colin and I simply picked up an old autocross car so we can just drop it off the trailer - run it - and put it on the trailer. Makes it easy and I don't have to change tires, etc. Also, it was relatively cheap!

Try to stay away from something german that's before a 98 or so. They break a lot and parts are expensive as well as labor. . . parts more expensive? ------> sure labor more expensive? ------> no, not really (just stay away from the dealer) break a lot? ------> what are you smokin' !!! Other than my swaybar issue (which was really my fault) I have had exactly 0 mechanical failures from my M3. And this is a 12 year old car with over 160K miles (over 80,000 of those came from me which means this car has NOT been babied). Sure, maintenance is higher and stock replacement parts are expensive (a great reason upgrade to aftermarket parts), but all in all the cost of ownership is not out of line with premium cars from other counties. German cars are among most well engineered, best built, and most reliable cars on the road ( the best IMO). The driving experience is simply icing on the cake. BTW, how many Subaru drivetrains have you broken now Tara?? ;D

And I remember when VW' s were good for about 50 thou before they became grenades. Sig heil!

It's not my fault the original driver went through about 6 total. Anyway, yes german cars are expensive. My dad's an automechanic and says they're difficult to work on sometimes. There's a whole list of cars that fall into that category and for some reason you're one of the few people I know with a BMW m3 that old that hasn't had major issues. Porsches are another money pit. Ask my bf, or his dad, or my dad from working on them. Audis once they get old and decrepid act the same way. An older car is just more prone to breaking and sometimes at that point between money and parts and labor, etc, you're better off spending the same money on a newer car with less upkeep. You may have spent more money from the beginning but will probably end up spending less in the long run because you bought a car with lower miles and newer.
