Just wanted to drop in and say hi and get some info on the upcoming AutoX. I have been to an event before as a spectator, but never had a car worthy of even trying (F150 Supercrew). I just got my dream car (05 Elise) and would like to start learning how to drive it up to its (and my) potential. I have a few questions:
1. Are there any other Elise/Exige owners that routinely show up? 2. Are there generally instructors available who can ride along and give a newbie advice? 3. Will loaner helmets be available? 4. Where is a good place to get a balacalava(SP?)?
Good to have you come out! There were four of your car at the 24hr event we held on labor day weekend, but in our club I haven't seen any regulars. The SCR group has a yellow one that shows up often. We do have loner helmets, but you may want to sqeeze out some change from the seats of that car and get your own. I bought one at the last event for 65 bucks brandnew. I had been using loaners all year but the thought of 24hrs of head swapping convinced me it was money well spent. Sometimes the race stuff supplier comes to the event, sometimes not.
Here are some suggestions on co-drivers who can HELP you:
Steve Rankin: Event chair and good driver as well
Mr. Zimmer in the butterscotch rabbit (10 years at the nationals!)
Rob Falkner in the Porsche Boxster. Top level as well.
Per Olaf in the red mini. He might not feel comfortable, but he just came back from the nat's as well.
There are a few more that I know I'm missing, but a conversation with any of these guys will get you a top level co-pilot to help you learn. A novices are allowed this.
If you like your clutch the way it is, un-cooked, avoid Mike Cassino. ;D ;D
The mouse dreams, dreams that would terrify the cat.
Mikey doesn't need a clutch!!!! But to echo Volksman's thoughts - you would find plenty of folks who are capable and willing to give you some instruction. Check out the "Novices Tips" thread in the Novices forum - Lots of good info, including a download for a Solo Handbook, that can give you a leg up when you come to the first event.
Used to autocross a Lotus Europa TC many many years ago - good to see Lotus back in the US with a great car.

Getting a helmet sounds like a good idea. I would like to do some track events once I get a little more comfortable with the car so I will need an SA2000 or better rated helmet. Any recommendations on where to go shopping for helmet in the Charlotte area? Definately don't want to do a helmet mail order so I can try them on.
Depends on what you want - At this time of year, the Simpson World Store (Mooresville) often has close-outs and you can get some good deals. A lot of places are clearing out the last of the SA2000s with the new SA2005s now available. Most of the good motorcycle shops carry good helmet lines and as Volksman said, we have had a guy showing up to sell stuff at our events. He had a thread somewhere here on the forum offering a special on helmet, gloves, etc for a great price for our club members. Since he could/would deliver you could try out the size you want.
Key is to get what you are comfortable with in a helmet that is a SA2000 or SA2005. You can use M-rated helmets for AX, but for track events you would want the SA-type. CCR usually does a couple of track events a year, including instruction, etc. So it is a great club to be with!

A lotus elise is pretty extreme for someone just starting out. If you want to swap and learn the ropes in my miata while I drive the elise, I might consider it. Welcome to the sport.
Shoot...i'll trade ya a 1979 Ford Fiesta...how could ya pass up an opportunity like that???

Yep, that was me... I'll be back there tomorrow. I was installing a computer system there, our company picked them up as a new customer.
I was invited to the TSCC autocross this weekend over in Laurinburg by the Lotus Dealership. Its a couple of hours away, but it will give me a chance to run with two other Elises! That should be a pretty site, three Elises lined up, yellow, silver, and red! I will definately come out for the CCR events though, as you are much closer to home! See you there!
Well unfortunately, my business takes precedence and it looks like I am going to be out of town on the 15th on a job. There is a small chance I might be back in time. Do the CCR events typically fill up ahead of time, or can you usually show the day of and get squeezed in?
Any body who wants a ride is more than welcome if I am able to make it. I'm not nearly skilled enough that the extra weight would have any effect!
The only requirements are that you watch this video!!! ;D
