I am trying to locate CCR-SCCA Autocross results from an autocross that was held at Metrolina Speedway (Yes, it was once asphalt!) from the summer of 1974 but also could be summer of 1975. My first autocross driving a friends Datsun 510. Yes, I am Old! Any other packrats out there that might have this? Thanks in advance.

I was there, Joe. I remember that event at Metrolina in 1974, but unfortunately, I don't have the results.
I got there late, and was relegated to "spectator" status. I was going to co-drive a TR6 with a friend of mine from Shelby, but he over-slept.
If anybody does have this I would certainly be interested. Russ Myers and I are going to try and re-construct CCR Solo history on the newly re-organized website.
We plan to start with 1976 since that is when CCR adopted SCCA Solo rules, and at the very least, we want to have all of the CCR Class Champions listed.

John, Do you remember Jerry Repogle (sp?) w/ the V-8 in the Austin-Healey 3000 at Metrolina? Couldn't corner at all but ran like a scalded dog in a straight line! I have a lot of old news letters and results that may be able to fill in some holes and would be happy to help in your quest. Hope somebody has the old results from Metrolina, it would settle a 30 year old argument!

Yes, I remember Replogle.....ran in class I with Tony Drum, Russ Thompson, the Cox Brothers (first set, not the current ones), GH, etc. Also, he did some road racing if I remember correctly.
Seems like he also had a Mini at some point.
and yes....we may be very interested in some of your old newsletters....stay tuned.

Was that the event the Europa pounded the inside wall? Not that in the early days there were any crashes. Maybe i should check the archive section of the museum. Right next to the dead sea scrolls (preserved in dead sea tupperware), there is a stack of CarNews., our old newsletter. May even be a few copies of *GASP!* the triad newsletter.

I would contend that an X-1/9 with a rotary engine could leave DSRs in it's wake...I'm building one if I hit the Powerball tonight...

I know I am old don't rub it in!
I don't remember a Europa hitting the wall but I do remember a Fiat 124 hitting the outside wall @ CMS at an autocross around the same era. Tha was some autocross! Forget the go-cart course, we were on the infield of the road course and the front strech of the speedway!
Soloracer, if you get a chance to look through those old CarNews, Let me know if you find those Metrolina results. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it was a Fiat 124? I don't remember that one. Gary Baucom and I were about the only guys running 124s back then, and I don't remember him being in an autocross at CMS after 1973 or so. By then, he had gotten into racing and hillclimbs. Maybe that cone I hit was really a wall ;D. I remember this course. We came down NASCAR pit road, and went left into the infield road course - where this photo was taken. After the road course, we went to the right and down the "tri-oval" front-stretch (backwards) to the entrance of the pit road. There we had a pivot cone which brought us back down the pit lane to the finish. The pivot cone, some offset gates down the road course back-straight, and a long slalom down the front straight were about the only things that separated this event from being a Solo 1 event. I was in third gear most of the way. This course would have never been approved in today's world. This particular event was in Sept 1975 (I think), and was my first SCCA trophy. I finished second to Joe Klitzche in class 4. I joined SCCA right after that event, because I was tired of paying the $5.00 entry fee while all the members were only paying $3.00. ......and yes, JK.....that's a 1974 124 Spider with Koni Shocks, and Abarth springs. Cars did "handle" before you were born. ;D ;D.

I was in a Maroon TR6. I had a bad synchro between 2nd & 3rd and it kept popping out of 3rd. Had to hold the shift lever w/ 1 hand and steer w/ the other!
I would have sworn it was a 124. The car was a light yellow color and spun on the front strech and hit the wall broadside. Not too much damage however on the car. I think it was one of the driver's first events! But since I am old, as has been so kindly pointed out, the memory could be a little soft! Great course though.

My memory isn't any younger than yours! ;D I just don't remember anything hitting a wall at Metrolina or CMS in 74. 75. or 76. The only event I remember at Metro was the '74 event, and we ran up to '77 at CMS when we held the SEDiv there. Then again, it may have been me that hit the wall, and I got amesia.

JByrd's note: "The only event I remember at Metro was the '74 event, and we ran up to '77 at CMS when we held the SEDiv there."
We continued to run at CMS well into the '80s, with basically the same course (infield plus front straight and pit lane) for most of the events. We ran at least one Divisional there (1987). I remember Floyd Bryant and Roy Herring (?) discussing the safety benefits of not having any cones on the front straight, because running 100-mph over the finish line (no exageration) was safer than try bringing the speed down by adding cones. We were using a rubber-tube timer, similar to the ones that rang the bells at service stations back in the days when attendants actually came out to the car and filled the tank. (That's another story.) The 'Vettes were so fast at the finish that the draft kept pulling the tube up off the track!
Sorry, but I don't have results from Metrolina.

Sorry, Dean. I was probably re-miss with my statment being made that way. I shoulda' said "until I left the game in 1979." Indeed, I was aware CMS continued to be used, but there's this strange "25-year gap" in my autocross memory. ;D I remember Floyd Bryant and Roy Herring (?) discussing the safety benefits of not having any cones on the front straight, because running 100-mph over the finish line (no exageration) was safer than try bringing the speed down by adding cones. Now there's an SSS nightmare for you!!!!! .....and yes.....I remember thinking to myself back then how "crazy" it was to have a high-speed slalom so close to the wall. The SEDiv event in 1977 consisted of 2 courses (that's how it was done in those days.): the basic course we've talked about using the road-course/pit-road/and front-stretch being one of them. The other was a Slalom down the back-strectch...around a pivot cone....and back through the slalom. Now that's a lot of cars "dancing" with concrete walls!!!!

John, Thought this was interesting, and a little depressing. In reviewing my old news letters for old results I found a newsletter announcing the new members for that period w/ my name in it. News letter was dated December, 1975! The name next to mine...John Byrd! This was when you had to be sponsored by two members. Remember yours? Found lots of old results you may be interestred in for your history. Just let me know.

I'll be darned!!!!!!! ;D I sitting here looking at the Newsletter now, and there you are right next to me! Unfortunately, most of my "history" prior to this period was "lost" with the 49er Sports Car Club (RIP). ;D Russ Myers can tell you about this one. If there's still anybody in the sport from that club....I can't remember anyone. The first event of the following year was the first event we ever used SCCA Solo Rules. See this thread. ccrscca.proboards51.com/index.cgi?board=solo2&action=display&thread=1141709835&page=1#1141709835You'll find Replogle here.
