This is more a general maintenance question, as the only attention I've ever given wheel bearings is just knowing when they're bad. Anyways, I'm doing my wife's brakes this weekend, and saw on one of the parts websites that they listed bearing grease as an 'associated' part that I may want to order, which made me think, hmmm, should I be repacking bearings every time I'm in there?? I can change pads and rotors, but now I'm wondering if my poor bearings are feeling left out. Thanks.

Depends on the car... Miata bearings are sealed, you can't do anything with them other than replace them. CMC price for a rear wheel bearing, replaced at Montgomery, is $168. Baggie said that it's about a 6 on a 1-10 pain in the ass scale... if you have all the right tools.
Whenver I did brakes on my '71 510 I repacked the bearings.

Whenever I take a rotor off of the spindle, I inspect and repack the wheel bearings. ;D

;D ;D ;D
Yep,... Clean grease is Happy Grease !!
If they are repackable bearings, like the Miatas, my Honda's are sealed, when they start makin noise, replace the expensive sum beaches.

If they are repackable bearings, like the Miatas Miata bearings aren't repackable... sealed unit like the Honda.

On the ITA RX-7, I generally check the grease every couple of pad changes and repack if it's dirty. If we overheat a corner and any grease leaks out, I'll pull the corner and see what the grease looks like, and usually replace it 'cause it looks ugly. And, of course, they have to be repacked, or actually packed, whenever the front rotors are replaced, since the rotor, hub, and bearing races are all one big (*heavy*) unit.

Hmmm, lots of good feedback here. Of course I like Shane's answer the best, but since it's my wife's car....I should probably stay at under a sixer. I guess I'll figure out if a Lexus RX300 has repackable bearings or not tomorrow when I get in there. Thanks all.

Sorry 'bout that, It was supposed to read "like the miata's , my hondas are sealed" not "if theyr'e repackable, like miata's" I used to skip English class and go ridin' around curvey roads, (with curvey girls, when possible) Yeah, in my dreams, I might as well say it before somebody else does,....... Right ?? I knew what I meant, I just said it wrong. Dummy.

Brain fade... been there, done that, got the t-shirt!!
In a way I'm glad that the Miata bearings aren't servicable... but it makes replacing them expensive! The 510 one was $15... I need another 510...
