I figure I might as well ask this question, knowing full well that I probably won't get a 'one-size-fits-all' answer. Anyways, with the weather looking chilly but dry for this weekend, I'm just curious how one knows at what point an R-compound tire is going to cross the point where it is so cold that it loses grip as compared to my standard P.O.S. full-tread all-seasons. High of 48 degrees predicted for Sunday, there ain't gonna be much heat build up at all, but still, slicks offer a lot more surface area of hard, cold rubber than my mushy treadblocks.
I'm pretty sure that I'll still be better off with the slicks than all-seasons, but how do you decide??

Hard to answer that one! But, at least with the Fiesta on full race slicks I have noticed a big difference in grip with changes in temperature. We had one event last year that I ran early on a cool day and then got to do fun runs later when the sun was out - took 2 seconds off of my time. Last year at NTI we never could get it to grip very well in the cold and others on race slicks seemed to have similar problems - we all dropped air pressure by a few pounds to try to get them warmer.
Now - is this any different than other tires - not sure, but they do seem more sensitive to temps than when I used to run on Falken Azenis.

I will be running on Yoko A048 "r" compounds this weekend. I can't imagine that that it would ever be cold enough around here for all-season tires to beat slicks as long as it is dry. Even all-seasons are going to lose grip in the cold weather. Of course this car is running special snow tires in cold weather.

Lowering pressure is about the only alternative if you're on streets... if you have adjustable shocks you can soften things some too.

I'm going to be on sticker Hankook Z211 DOTs. At least I have AWD so I can warm all four at the start line...LOL
