In an effort to cut out the spammers, we can make the board so that only forum members can post.
Now, this will make it so that a new person would have to register before posting anything, but that's not really a bad thing...
By the way, you have to be a member of the forum to vote in this poll.
So, VOTE!

Just to play Devil's Advocate here.
We do get a lot of "real guests" here from other clubs, or from people in other parts of the country who are looking to come here for an event.
I can certainly see the point of making it "members only," but I also hate to choke off some of the legit guests we might have.
I'm not really sold on nor convicted to this idea, but just wanted to offer some discussion.

I thought about that too, but it only takes a minute to register, and the admins don't have to approve the registration... so if someone is really serious, they can join quickly.
Now this WILL NOT restrict guests from reading, just from posting and replying to threads.

Is it possible to create a category that doesn't require membership - for general inquiries, but restrict the more detailed groups to members.
That way someone who wants to ask a general question can get a response, but if they want to chime in on something more specific they would join.
If not, then I am OK with requiring membership.

Sure, that's easy to do...

That's probably the best answer right there.
That's similar to what Tar Heel does, but I believe you can only join their forum if you are a club member. I don't think any of us wants to be that extreme.

Let's allow the poll to run for a few days and see what the response is... then I can make whatever changes we want.

Triad requires you sign up before posting and you have to wait till they send you password to get on. I am not opposed to it - I think it si good for folks to register, but you don't want it to be to difficult. I like the idea of allowing a restricted forum for guests as suggested above.
So, I have cast a vote for open to all at this point!

Definitely only allow registered users to post.
It's so easy to register and get a login ID, and it will keep the spammers out. Also, someone can make disparaging comments and hide behind the "guest" ID.

Good point on registration...but, I like Pissedonwheels suggestion up above - limited access for guests.
Good thread!

I like the idea of only forum members be allowed to post. We can't administer guests. It doesn't take that much to register, but it might make a spammer think it's not worth the effort.
Not only that, we should be able to capture the IP addy if they register, enabling us to ban the IP rather than the name.
Also, I would like to allow guests to view the forum without registering.

I will note that the spammers are generally using automated programs (you don't think 'trew' was typing that all by hand, do you?), and requiring an account to post won't make a whole bunch of difference.

I think triangle goes way too far. I think posting should be for registered users only, but viewing, searching, etc should be allowed for anyone.

Requiring an account would at least keep them from posting the trash as a guest. Obviously I don't know the spam programs, but they may not be smart enough to join a forum on their own...

If they're smart enough to beat the 'type this in' test for guests (and the programs are), they're smart enough to beat the same test and use an email address to create an account. This won't make any difference in spam. Moderators that can ban IP addresses and IP ranges, along with pruning existing spam is what makes the difference.

Yes, we do! And we must use our superpowers to fight the forces of EVIL and to support the American Way!
I would like to reverse my vote in favor of requiring registration to post!

I would like to reverse my vote in favor of requiring registration to post! you CAN'T!! You can only vote once. This isn't France where you can run from any fight, or change your mind after you've committed!!! ;D

yeah, yeah i know..but there have been some convincing arguements. And, I disagree - I don't recall the French ever committing to anything!

May be a good idea to ban anyone with over a thousand posts as being spammers.

On a random note...does Monty Python get any commission on the use of the word 'spam'. Does the Spam company... I wonder if they trademarked it.....

What I'm saying is that the way the question is asked will assure "Yes" will be the winning choice. Who wants to vote FOR spam? (even if restricting posting won't do anything one way or another)

Ok, new idea.... I'll open a poll if y'all like the idea...
1. Only forum members can create threads and reply. Anyone can READ the forum, but you must sign up to post anything. 2. Only forum members can create threads, everyone can reply anywhere. Anyone can READ the forum. 3. Keep the forum open to all, guests can post and reply everywhere. 4. Create a "Guest" area where they can create threads and reply. Only members can create and reply to all other areas.
How's that?
My choices on the admin side are for each board section are: Create threads: Everyone, Registered Members, Staff Reply to Threads: Everyone, Registered Members, Staff Create Polls: Everyone, Registered Members, Staff

Good idea Rich. Start the poll with those new options. I like the second option.
