We had good attendance and had 5 first time visitors. As usual, the fellowship was great and I got to meet up with an old racing bud from Michelin I hadn't seen since TJ was born, Bob Haubenreich. Bob, thanks for coming and I hope you will attend again. Bring Randy Christ, Bob Falk, Alex Papadatis and others! We also laid some plans for the upcoming autocross at Greenville Braves stadium Nov. 11th. That was our FIRST OFFICIAL AUTOCROSS! Congratulations on a successful event in the upstate. That was a goal for our group and we did it!
Our vendor of the month was CHAP Racing Services. Steve Hampton told us about the support services he and Steve Cook provide track side as well as in their Piedmont shop. He reviewed their capability and summed it up saying anything you can't do, we can do and show you how to do it right. This included roll cage fab, suspension tuning, electricals, plumbing and engine management. These services are for full race cars, hill climb cars, autocross cars and street cars. (864) 915-1776 or gshamp@bellsouth.net
Steve also was our speaker on the topic of Race Preparations. Steve is a NC State grad (Mechanical Engineering) with a wide range of experience as crew chief and team manager for GT1 & 2, Asphalt cars, several successful SCCA Road racing teams, and ... my favorite area... designing and building successful hill climb cars. He and Steve collaborated to build Mike Green's hillclimb car that held records at Chimney Rock and Grandfather Mountain for many years. He is currently campaigning an IT7 Mazda RX7.He passed out checklists he uses to insure all items are covered for race day. The impact to most of us was that there are too many things for one person to try to remember... track logs of events and checklists are vital to success. He gave a lot of tips on tracking changes, getting driver impressions, set ups and answered general questions from members. His talk was interesting and informative and we appreciate him coming and speaking to the group. In thanks, we gave Steve a checkered flag to hang in his garage at the CHAP shop in Piedmont, SC.
We also discussed plans for a December outing. In January, Scott Franklin has agreed to speak on safety rules and equipment for 2008. He hopes to show us some economical ways to meet the rules and still have money left to race. We hope to have Mike Burke speak the following month on getting started in Road racing. Mike has an excellent knowledge and has done this talk for other groups in the past. We look forward to these meetings. If you know of a business that would like to be Supplier of the Month, please let me know. Thanks for coming and your continued support for SWCCCR!!!
