hey everyone, im new to the site and ive been to an event or two, and i must say im impressed! i have a question though, as many of you know there was a HUGE operation to bust street racing in charlotte almost a month ago (rea road stonecrest shopping area). police taped racing for 3-4 months and partnered with business owners to trap import owners (and everyone else in the vicinity. I know that street racing is illegal and dangerous etc etc etc. but people are STILL going to do it anyway. the police seemed happy setting up young CAR ENTHUSIASTS and by searching their cars without warrants and confiscating items not proven to be stolen (some people had legitimate engine swaps but vin numbers did not match the car so police took the vehicle) I like the way the scca finds safe areas for people to test their driving skills, unfortunately there are no drag competitions. I have heard that there may be an effort to have several drag competitions at knights stadium in the spring, is this true? If so, i would like to hear more info or offer suggestions. to help curb street racing the police have provided a consequence, unfortunately they care nothing for an alternative. Lives are at stake, and this could be a way to end the illegal activity. any info would be greatly appreciated ;D.

Mooresville Dragway is just up the road. Not trying to br flippant, just putting it out there for thought. I hear Pageland, SC has a nice strip. Personally, I said this (street racing) would be a bigger problem when the homeowner facists closed down Shuffletown.

I was about to say. Matt you know there is Mooresville Dragway, yeah it's not 1/4 mile but it's still dragracing. There are a few others around the area as well.
The people who go out on the weekends at night to street race are idiots. Just pay $15 and go to mooresville instead of getting arrested and loosing your car.

Does Mooresville do a Friday night "run what you brung" type of thing? It looks like Rockingham does something like that from time to time. When my dad was doing some development on his Ralt for DSR (road racing) he took it to the strip in Jacksonville a few nights to test some things.

Yup Thuresday nights i think last thuresday was their last for the season. It's only $15 to run and $7 to watch.
One thing I dont get from the street racers is they say there is no tracks which there are. You tell them the tracks they say they dont want to DRIVE to them. I dont understand it. Drive 30-45 minutes to a legal dragstripe instead of driving the same ammount of time going to different spots to meet up and race people.

Russ russ youre absolutely right! iheard that was why it got closed down... i can understand both sides of the story it is pretty stupid to drive all over charlotte when you can just go to moorseville. but mooresville isnt open as much as these guys would like, and it isnt in charlotte. i guess they just want something for convenience in their own hometown. some say the track costs too much although 15 bucks is worth way more than getting your car taken true, (although you get harrassed anyway) i for one would love to see something at knights stadium or something, i have a comprehensive report from racelegal.com that gives FULL detail how they started and what they did to set up to help curb the street racing in san diego, if anybody would like to see it just give me a shout ;D

No offense but there's no "safe" way to put anything like a drag strip time thing at Knights. There's not enough room on both sides of the road to safely put on such an event at the speeds reached. With that in mind, I doubt you'd be able to get insurance at the site for an event like that nevermind an o.k. from the site. Autocross is a relatively low speed car control event. However, I suggest you all give autox a try. It's a lot more interesting than going in a straight line or weaving in and out of traffic on a public road with your friends for fun. I just can't see what you're proposing to work in anyway shape or form.

There were several threads on the Imports NC board about building a drag strip in Char / Meck. Pretty much everyone has said that it won't fly because of the noise ordnances that exist. That's one thing that killed Shuffletown.
I agree, street racing is stupid. I think part of what may keep the street racers away from organized tracks is the rule part of the event. They have to pass a tech inspection (some cars are garbage), they have to wear a helmet (they don't when the street race) and there's no "danger" aspect or "getting away" with something. I'd bet that is part of the thrill, for better or worse. AX and legal drag racing don't offer that...
I'm sure we'd embarrass those with 400hp Civics when a 120hp Miata or a 54hp CRX-HF beats their time on an AX course... they probably wouldn't come back!

For Test and Tune's....you only have to wear a helmet if you're under 12 seconds.....and have a roll cage if you're under 11 I believe. I used to know that for sure....but I haven't been to the strip in a while, so it's kinda faded on me.
Also, at Mooresville for T&T....there's no Tech inspection. If you go to something like the Fox Hunt at Rockingham....yeah...there's Tech for that.

i just dont understand how in LARGER more populated cities they can find areas (qualicomm staduim parkinglot) to do this. I guess people areound here are too hard headed to just go to a track or too conservative try to find a way to help prevent street racing, ive seen streets shut down andwaivers signed just like crscca does. oh well guess like my friend says its just the atmosphere of the city. guess its just going to take a few more hard headed street racers to kill somebody or themselves before anybody starts realizing those goons wont stop on the street (happend in gastonia, now they have a cruise strip) oh well.

Well, nothing gets done unless someone steps up to make it happen. Sounds like you have looked into it in depth and have some solid information to work with. Might be worth getting up with some of the car clubs that have a "drag-racing" interest and see what can be done. I will say that I have been to Qualcomm stadium and as I recall their parking lot and roads are straighter and do not have the obstructions we have at Knights. But - hey, you can't find out if you don't try.
This group likes to turn left, right, stop, go and sometimes all at once (that is called a Chicago Box!).
Don't get discouraged - but it may take some work. At least our community is now aware of street racing as a real problem.
