We have had a number of folk who have become licensed with National HQ as Safety Stewards in the last year or so, and we have still others who were licensed once and let their licenses lapse {shudders}, some who took the seminar and didn't work as deputies etc. Let's get together a list here so we all know who we are. I had personal problems for the last few events. I showed up to do first shift waivers, then had to leave. For 2007 I hope to do waivers, then deputy safety steward at a few events. One of my goals is to make sure we are compliant with the rule that everyone on-site has a wristband, and has signed the waiver.

We need Safety Stewards for Kershaw over EAster weekend. I will not be in attendance. I understand Jack (TR driver) will be there. Who else?

Aimee F. has taken the training seminar but has not as yet worked as a deputy SS. Add her to the list. She hopes to be fully licensed soon.

Aimee...I see that you may need some SSS experience time to put in the logbook. I will kick you in as a DSS/SSS for the super-regional if you need it.
OK - and to all you SSS types - I have added to a thread over in the SSS forum page, might be a good idea to discuss a few things as we approach a busy month of Solo

Most recent Safety Belt article: Should be required reading
Reprinted here in its entirety Speed Creep?
By Jan Rick, SSC Member
(Ed note: If you'll remember from our last issue, I told you than Jan, Kathy, and I were going to be presenting a session at the National Convention in San Antonio about speed creep. What follows is the outline for that session that was put together by Jan with input from the entire SSC).
What is Speed Creep?
1. The phenomenon of Solo Speeds getting faster over the evolution of the sport of autocrossing
2. In the Beginning…..There were:
a. MG’s, FIATS, and other low powered sports cars
b. Skinny wheels, hard tires, and real stock shocks
c. Small parking lots with curbs
d. The faster drivers were people named Marc & Art
3. Then came:
a. Honda’s, C4 Corvettes, Formula Fords and other faster and better-handling cars.
b. Wider wheels, adjustable shocks, and R Compound Tires
c. Airport Sites, huge shopping center lots, street courses, and race tracks
d. Other clubs running higher speeds while SCCA’s insurance carrier was watching
e. The fastest drivers were now Chuck, Howard, Andy, Beth, and many more
4. What do we have now?
a. A new generation of people with a new mentality about Solo and speed
b. More sophisticated cars with fuel injection, all-wheel drive, and other enhancements
c. Massive expanses of pavement sometime available to use
5. What does the rule book say?
a. Section 1.3 – Generally, maximum speeds in the mid 50's to low 60's (mph) are contemplated for Stock and Street Prepared (and we would add Street Touring) category vehicles
b. Section 2.1.A -- ... It must be remembered that sites themselves vary and not all sites will safely support the speeds shown in these guidelines (see Section 1.3)
6. How does Speed Creep Develop?
a. Running old courses with newer cars
b. Letting old course designers set up courses like they used to
c. Setting up the same small-lot courses on large lots and just expanding them to fit -- with no regard to Speed Creep.
d. Not keeping all of today’s classes and cars in mind when designing a course or prohibiting classes or cars to allow for higher speeds for others.
e. Divisionals, National Tours, Nationals
f. Event organizers who have no regard for safety
g. Event organizers who have no regard for the future of our sport
7. How to measure Speed Creep
a. Use Data Acquisition Loggers like Data-Logger, G-Tech and many others
b. Ask for help from the owners of Data Acquisition Loggers
c. If possible, have someone pre-drive the course with a data logger and check it.
d. Know the 2-3 shift points of the fastest cars
e. You CAN NOT use estimates
f. People say “I was topped out in 3rd gear at turn 4, so it was too fast”
g. “This club always goes too fast”
h. Get the REAL facts of the speed if it’s questionable
8. Misconceptions about Speed Creep
a. Just because a course feels “fast” doesn’t mean it is too fast for the safety guidelines.
b. Faster is more fun
c. Just because a lot might support higher speeds doesn’t mean the rule book or SSS should condone it
9. Who’s Responsibility is it to control Speed Creep?
a. The Region must assure that the SSSs are doing their job and keeping speeds from creeping past the rules
b. Divisional Solo Safety Steward
i. Should be made aware of any problem so it can be investigated
ii. Re-training on Speed Creep issues can be recommended for a Region or SSS if needed.
10. What will happen if we don’t control Speed Creep?
a. Our insurance rates could increase
b. We can’t have the perception that we are violating our own rules
c. Lot acquisition becomes harder if speeds get out of hand or incidents increase
11. In Closing
a. Is Speed Creeping up on you?
b. What are going to do about it?
