The upcoming issue of "Our State" magazine will have a great feature article on the history of the Chimney Rock Hillclimb. I believe it will hit newsstands on April 29. It is very rare to have any coverage of our sport, but to have this appear in a upscale general interest magazine is special. I bet it will generate some letters to the editor from folks who attended some of those magic events. Along with the Wolf Ridge Hillclimb article that appeared in last months Grassroots, we should see some new interest in our hillclimb program. www.ourstate.com/

Great article...
and guys... keep kicking me to get it done. It's okay! I want to finish that Hillclimbing book more than you know.... but there's one thing I want to do more than that. I want to do it justice.
Writing a book on the History of Southeastern hillclimbing has really been an enjoyable experience but... it just keeps getting bigger. It's like an onion, every layer produces another layer. These are some of the things that can't be left out... Interviews with Kieft, Bowland, Finger, Green, Wally and Tidwell When Steve met Vickie... the Eckerich Connection at Chimney Rock Pictures of drivers then and now Park History... (including pre-1956 unsanctioned runs) The Immortal - J.K Jackson (my research shows that for his first run at Chimney Rock, they used an hourglass...and his horse almost stepped on it at the finish line) 2 Stories of Nitrous that was used at C.R. (I have spoken with both drivers) Interviews with Dean and Roger - from the chair
So.. forgive me for being slow and please KEEP sending stories and pictures. I want to do this right... and running some more hillclimbs I am hoping will add to the understanding. I have gotten to know some great local guys with outstanding records in hillclimbing.. and that has been a great learning experience and a lot of fun as well. I am corresponding with the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association guys and a group of hillclimbers in England. (If one of us hits the lottery, we got to send George over there for a few hillclimbs... they probably forgot just how much trouble we colonists can be!) Some of the guys like George, Dave, Stan, Mash, Tony, Mark, Willie...have not only helped but become friends as well. There is a deep passion for this sport and it is getting contagious again. That pleases me more than I can say. Heck...it might even be hereditary... based on conversations with TJ so far...I am almost sure of it.
