Hi. I am planing to start doing SOLO racing with my car but I need to know what class I will be in. I have a 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege. The only modification that is has is a cold intake system. I still have the stock one. What would be the class That I will run. Thanks.

you came to the right place man, glad to hear you will be out with us. My name is Bill. i am the novice cheif. Looks like you will be in Street Touring unless you want to put the stock air cleaner assembly back in and then you can run stock class tire.
if you have any other questions let me know or call 704-658-6009

So we are talking Sreet Touring if I keep the cold air intake, not ST Xtreme were there is another 03 MPS. If I replace the stock air box again then I would be D Stock class. Am I correct?

I am looking at the DIY Car Classing page and it is confusing to see that I can have R compound tires like the radials that Hoosier does on stock rims and I still can be at D Stock Legal, but the Street touring can't use them.

yes, STX or DS DS can run DOT approved radials like Hoosiers, but STX has to run street tires, ST, with a certain treadwear rating.

Hi Bill,
My stock plastic tube from the IC to the TB cracked. This is something that ills all Mazdaspeed proteges. I am thinking about changing it to the aluminum ones. If I add a BOV on this tubing, doe it affect me also on the class (stock or ST)? I hate the plastic tubing from mazda, I broke the hot pipe like 2 years ago, and now is the IC to TB.
If it changes me than I can always ordered without the extra BOV.
Thanks

Changing that pipe I believe bumps you well out of stock and ST all the way to Street Modified(SM). If you change that BOV to an atmospheric, aka the noisey one, that DEFINATELY bumps you to SM. Honestly, starting out I wouldn't worry too much about being in the right class. Come out to an event with us, play, have some fun, improve your driving and then work from there.
Glad to see your interest and hope to meet you soon.

If i were you..id change back to the stock pipe and source another stock peice. ST is getting nasty with competition (doesnt really matter if your a novice)..but Stock class seems to be the biggest bang for the buck class from a money standpoint.
