I was just curious if anyone else was interested in putting on/participating in an off season (maybe even ON SEASON) event that would resemble a TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) otherwise known as a road rally or Poker Run. The goal of a TSD, is the winner would be CLOSEST to a preset total elapsed time/distance. It is NOT a race and is not conveyed as one. Penalties (points) for arriving early are worse than arriving late!
A few years ago, Mark Sieler, put one one that benefited the Carolina Blind Association. We used convertibles and had visually handicapped individuals as our co-pilots. It was a great time and a great event. We also had some local TV news coverage and interviews to help highlight the club.
There are other car clubs that put them on occasionally, that I have participated with and they have been great fun. i.e. The Moonshine Rally always ends at a winery!! The Carolina Z Club created a "scavenger hunt" that was about 400 miles!
There are MANY, MANY different themes and possiblities!!!
The purpose of this thread is to judge interest and gather volunteers that would assist/run the event.
Themes/route/charities/gimmicks will be explored at a later date if enough interest by the general club membership is created.
If enough are interested, we we will probably create a poll to better understand and move forward in the planning stages.
What say Ye?

Thanks for posting this up Ken.
One thing I did want to mention is that Rally covers a wide world of activities, from monument rally, TSD, Tulip to Poker Runs.... some very scientific, some just fun a scenic and some that are loaded with gimmicks to make them fun and entertaining.
Example :
GIMMICK - I set up a rally for SCCSC years ago at Halloween called Ghostbusters. I mapped out the course for weeks in advance. Evening of the event at dusk (day before Halloween), I drove around the pre-scribed roads and poured a bag of flour in a stripe across the road. there were 30 stripes out there somewhere. Each rally participant was given a set of numbered instructions like "1. left 2. right after railroad tracks 3. right". CArs are released with 3 minute gap. Each time they ran over a white stripe, they performed the next numbered direction at first opportunity. At the end of each leg was a guy with a pumkin full of candy and instructions for the next leg... and a panic envelope drivers could open if they got lost to make it to next leg start point. When you ran over the stripes, they would blow up in the air like a ghost. Some ran the event in a stationwagon with three kids in the back.
LANDMARK - like above but instructions are more "left at green bird bath" "right after cross in air" (a church with cross steeple). All instructions are clues you have to figure out... but if you get lost, panic slips get you to next check point so you can continue. These are a load of fun.
IF there is enough interest in having a rally, I would recommend the first one be just this.. a FUN one. A full TSD rally calculating CAST (Change Average Speed To) and keeping it inside street legal speeds is a handful. Like are SCCA President says"Make it simple. Make it FUN!" If it goes well, then we can delve into the complicated sport of TSD !
Just my thoughts. Speak up members! Interested? New Years could be a good time to try out a fun rally!

Yes - I think I could convince my wife to participate in this.
Along the lines of the visually handicapped navigator thing... This could be a charity event for Wounded Warriors or something along those lines. Get some of our real heros out on the road for a brisk country drive. Or - there are a few orphanages left here in NC.. Maybe get a kid as a navigator?
I agree - lets do something soon - maybe not too complicated for the first one to get it off the ground sooner.

A TSD rally gone bad breaks image links!? OH CRAP!!!! I'd be down for one. I have a friend who is an excellent navigator and has the OCD required to compete in a CAST style TSD that would love to do one. I think an event for charity would be great fun for a great cause and a lot easier to both run and compete in than a full blown TSD rally.
