Who all runs in GS?
I have a 08 GTI with an intake, which puts me in STX. I was thinking of putting the stock box back on so I can run in GS, but I'm not sure how much competition there is in GS. If I were to stay in STX, I'd need to ditch my All Seasons for some better tires and do a few suspension upgrades to be competitive, but I don't want to be in a class by myself.

Take a look at last years results - it'll give you an idea on whos who.. Doesn't look like alot in GS www.ccrscca.com/solo-racing/2011-season-points-and-results/Your stock classes usually have 1-2 that run every event, and then some that run a few here and there. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you'll probably be getting better tires either way. You can run DOT Slicks in Stock class, and you'll be looking for 140 treadwear tires for STX.

Yeah your probably right. I'll need better tires no matter what class I'm in. I'll probably just focus on improving the driver this year and worry about making the car better next year. Thanks for the input.

My recommendations. If you go to GS, run in Tire class. Tire is a PAX class, there is a thread that explains it more, that is always interesting with competition. If you want some really good competition, go to STX. They are all fast.

When you say "Intake", what do you mean? A Cold Air Intake (replacing Filter and Airbox) or an Intake Manifold? Regardless of class you should ditch all-seasons for some Extreme Summer Performance Tyres.

being that your relatively new to the sport then my suggestion would be to run novice class. tire class seems to be getting tougher and tougher. novice class will put in you a pax'd class that will have drivers with expierence level closest to yours and will allow for maximum growth and improvement. put that airbox back in and run gs because the pax is much easier on you. drop in filters are allowed in stock so a k&n may be a good comprimise.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I think I'll take off the filter on a stick (no performance gain anyways) and put the stock box back on and run GS in novice like Mark said. That would give me the most competition and the best chance at being competitive with my all seasons til I can save some money for some better tires.

I've been autoxing my MK6 since I bought it over a year ago. I would highly suggest either running G stock or tire class once you have a few events under your belt. Once you've done a couple events or more, then I would recommend either replacing your stock tires with ultra high performance tires like the dunlop star specs or hankook rs3s. Star specs will have better wear, but some argue don't have the absolute grip the hankooks do. The best thing would be to buy a second set of wheels and mounts these tires on them. Yes, you'll have to swap them on and off either right before an event or at the event, but you'll extend the life of the tires a great deal.
Locally, there aren't alot of folks running g stock, but nationally, there are still a good bit of folks that compete. The mk5 and mk6 are still capable of being competitive.
