I am curious about this tire. Its a DOT rated tire for street use, but its a R compound. So would this be legal for ST Classing?
Any info would be great

Nope. Hoosier A6s are DOT rated for street use too, actually. The only tires that are ST legal are treadwear 140 or above and not on the exclusion list. (Currently just the Pirelli P Zero Corsa)

RS3s are the other big thing in street tires, but they're hard as hell to come by right now... backordered everywhere. The big advantage they have is that they're more friendly to heat than the Star Specs are. Star Specs will hit their peak temp and the grip just falls off. I'm pretty sure Toyo makes the R1R in a size that fits our car too, but Toyo's distribution model annoys me as nobody around here that I called seemed to be able to get the R1R or even know what they are.... and they won't let Tire Rack carry them. *shrug* Stick with the Star Specs and bring a tire sprayer as temps go up this summer.

I've also been told the Toyo's get harder as you wear 'em out.
Like Duck said: get a garden sprayer at Wally-World (under $20) and spray 'em down between runs when it gets hotter.

If you can find the Kooks, you won't need to spray them. Same with the Kumho XS....hotter the better.
....but you pay for it in cold weather, particularly with the Kumhos....they never get enough heat.

a quick google search turns up that the optimal temp range for the star specs is 150-180

I drove on them at The Mitty last year at the little AutoX track that Skip Barber and Kumho put on. Those were THE most godawful tires I've ever experienced. They had a nice sharp turn in, and then all grip just disappeared and the car was in a 4 wheel slide. I felt like I was babying the car around the track at a snail's pace. Even my crappy General Exclaim UHPs outperformed the Kumho XS.

They have them in 225/45/17 - which I think is what Ball80 is running.

For the record, I can show you Traqmate data where Kumho XSs out gripped Toyo R1Rs on my car.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the closer street tires get to r comps, the more like them they become from other perspectives....like for instance.....consistency within sets of tires.
The Toyos I had on my car were not new, but had just been dismounted from a National Tour winning car. They immediately went on to my car, and I tested them side by side at the 2010 12 hours.
The Toyos just didn't work on my heavy car. The Mini is sort of a "tweener" when it comes to weight, but who knows until you try them?

Standard autocross equipment for people who are serious are an air pressure gauge (not a somebody else’s gauge, your own gauge, that is consistent to you and whatever pressures you run) and a water spray bottle. With the summer heat coming, I don't care what tires you have you should spray them with water after almost every run. They will fall off half way through your run if you don't. You have to keep ahead of the heat build-up.
Hankooks = squirmy side walls, ok on really light cars Toyos = soft on the outside hard on the inside if you get bigger than 195's Kuhmos = You'd have to pay me to drive them Dunlops = AWESOME! last long and are great in all weather.

the star specs you have are great choice, they stand up to abuse really well and can take hard launches and stuff without causing too much damage to the tire (camber deficiencies can rob you of some of it's life in the long run, but that's true with all cars)

Both times I got in, I asked the guy which tires were on the car, and both times I got the XS But yes, VERY fun to play with someone else's car The year before they did a Lotus Evora thing, but I didn't get a chance to drive it

...so spark notes for the thread....
(1) Direzza's are your best choice. They're grippy and hold up really well to abuse
(2) Get a tire sprayer (deck sprayer or what have you), and spray down the tires between runs, especially in the hot summer months
