I've heard lots of speculation but nothing official about the classing of the BRZ/FRS. I'm one of the foolish early adopters and want to try my car out at Blake Lake. I'm planning to run comPletely stock with 17x8 wheels and 235/40 star specs, so what do you guys think? STX? That class seems to come up the most in my Internet searches. I'll be running Novice PAX, but I want to make sure I pick the most appropriate base class. I assume a stock class is out of the question since I've upgraded from the 17x7 stock wheels.
Should I register unclassified and just ask the SCR officials about it on site?

It's not officially classed by the SCCA yet. Lots of regions have put it into CS and STX until there's an official answer from the SCCA.
TECHNICALLY... by the letter of the rules... it should actually fit into STC....
vs STX

But he is running 8" wheels, 235mm tires. Stc is max 7.5" wheel, 225mm tire. He might end up in stu.

Both are available with only a package tray instead of a rear seat so I'm betting thats the reason for STX .

It'll be STX, not STU. STU is for >5.0l naturally aspirated engines, and the BRZ has a little 150lb ft torque 2 liter. DEFINITELY not STU material.

Why not STR? It is a 2 door car like the rest of STR..

Is there a coupe in STR?

Technically.. The Clown Shoe Z3 coupe (I know it's a hatch, but no back seat) is an STR car. So SCCA tells me.

Thanks for all the discussion so far guys. I guess these things are never cut and dry are they? Sure wish SCCA could've come up with something by now, but I guess they need more time to consider everything.
I'm far from an expert (that's why I'm still in Novice!), but a lot of the other forums I read seem to compare the BRZ to the RX-8 and that seems to be where the STX classing comes from. What are the major differences between the BRZ and RX-8 that might seperate them in a ST class? Don't they both have similar power/weight ratios, rwd, naturally aspirated, and 4 seats? I guess the RX-8 has those half rear doors, but other than that what major performance differences are there?

Tire size for one. How much meat can the BRZ fit under the fenders?

We won't know until we start driving the BRZ to compare it The car is so new it is hard to tell. You'd have to know someone that already has one to see what they think and hope they have experience in the sport to provide the proper feedback. There was an FRS in Triad a couple weeks ago, but he appeared to be driving like a novice.

Tire size for one. How much meat can the BRZ fit under the fenders? I saw one person on a subaru forum use 245/40 tires on 17x9 wheels with 42 offset. It's tight, but fit without fender mods. He ran STX at a regional event last weekend.

Since it looks like the SCCA is going to be putting the car in CS, I believe STX would be the best place for it. The FR-S/BRZ would get killed in STU. Plus, with the car in STX and the suspension changes allowed, the strut front suspension would not be as big of a draw back as it is in CS. STR is mostly for cars that did not have a back seat as an option. ST/STC are mostly low HP FWD cars, and STU tends towards 4WD or forced induction sedans. STX will be a nice fit that will allow for reasonable tires on the car as well.

Tire size for one. How much meat can the BRZ fit under the fenders? it doesn't matter how much they can fit ... if it is to be considered for any ST class there are maximum tire & wheel sizes associated with each of the different ST(x) classes

All this talk over a mediocre car that is put on a pedestal because nobody makes cool cars anymore.
This makes me sad.
