Good suggestions... we just DO NOT want to allow everyone at the site to hop on the CCR wireless and timing server. That sounds like a fantastic way to crash timing during an event...
Having a separate AP for "public" use at an event with a laptop acting as the web server would be great. It should be easy enough to copy / FTP the results file over to that machine. Really won't need much of a laptop, horsepower wise.

Why would you have 80 cell clients on the network. You publish them to a Internet page and they go their via their phones data plan If we can't get Internet access to FTP the files to... people could just hit the AP and get the results that way.

Coolness... i appreciate everyones effort on this. Im not picky. Just one method that works consistently is enough for me..

Consistent & AXWare - two words that shouldn't be used the same sentence!!

But AXWare IS consistent.... consistently a pain in the arse.
I think I'm going to download the demo and play around with it to see what all I can learn about its operation and test out the live reporting thing.

Even with a co-driver, I find time to sneak over to the timing PC and check how things are going if I didn't get a slip. Yes, you prep the car, but then when the co-driver goes to the line you've got about 3-4 minutes minimum before you need to be back at the spot. That's plenty of time to walk up and check things out. Not to mention you should be walking up there anyway to watch your co-drivers run so you can share thoughts.
I like the slips, but don't find them any more useful than a glance at a timing board on the way back in.

Duck. I'm glad your looking at a way to live stream. Granted not everyone will agree on one way to do timing. It's nice to have a couple of options. Some use fm radio, some live stream, timing slips, announcer, and tv screen. I think all of these ways make it easier for the public which we are catering to, get more enjoyment out of each event. A announcer like aj who has a knack for remembering things is great. And being able to just sit in my car and see everything a far as time on my iPhone was great. We can't cater to every way, but I think that announcing, live timing and maybe the computer screen should be it. Then we don't need people handing out time slips. We don't have to worry about the printer getting hit. And that still leaves 3 ways to get times.

Well I downloaded the demo of AXware so I could learn more about it, and let me say this.... A) I figured out how to turn the export interval for live results from 5 minutes down to 1, which should help get them on the screen for everyone faster B) I figured out how the announcer client and the announcer results window is supposed to work, and HOLY CRAP is it awesome! I don't think I've ever seen anyone use that before, they (and I when I've had to announce) just worked off the normal results window at the bottom. C) AXware crashes a lot :-\ D) I've figured out easier ways to add cars to the staging rather than just typing them in and fiddling with who is who... assuming we're letting AXware do the heat assignments. E) If we did "national style" grid with assigned spots, our jobs in timing would be MUCH simpler without even the need for barcodes

Kuhn, are you referring to exciting announcers such as myself, Mike Johnson, David O'Malley? Yes that would be awesome to have every run group. I wish we could have announcers every group, however we either forget the position or no one is willing to do it. Not everyone has a knack or willingness for public speaking. I know I used to try to make myself available to PRO class run group each event, but it hasn't been possible lately. I seem to run with PRO too much lol. National Results on site. Time slips, if used, are literally a Post-It note written on with sharpie that solely shows your time and if the person doing them happens to hear your penalties from the announcer. There are multiple displays to view. Otherwise, yes, there is online with sololive, which is the most reliable source. I know duck, ironic. Would "going green" be nice? Yes. I won't deny that. Of course we also should facilitate those that still live in the stone age like Walter and Frodo. No hard feelings buddies. We updated our AxWare version to the latest and greatest and there have been glitches. We are getting them worked out with the creator and on our end. Duck, if you are willing to help with some of this stuff. I would appreciate it. You know where the equipment lives. There are a few things I wish to work on, but you know how busy I get in the shop. Thank you for the idea Travis and to everyone else for their input. The best news is that there will be timeslips at weekend events again.

I'm sure I'm not the only person that has these problems ..... no smart phone .... no radio .... the announcer has already giving your time by the time you get in range of a speaker ... that leaves time slips / TV

Not fast enough... drive faster! Not sure what place you're in? Only one solution... drive faster! Solid advice for anyone willing to take it

Walter,
Your next phone upgrade we are going shopping together. If I can teach my grandparents how to FaceTime and use a iPhone. I'm sure I can teach you. Once you change, you will never want to go back. It's like being a virgin, you don't know what your missing.
Duck. If you need help with the networking and computer stuff, I'm not the guy. But the 2 guys I run with are crazy smart. Steven is the one who helped with getting glitches out of scr website and standing results. I can pm you his contact info if so needed.
I'm just excited that people are open to new ideas, where they may not personally benefit, they realize that others may. I have the zmax itch already!!!

I'm just glad that people are FINALLY taking an interest and stepping up to help out... for too many years it was just one or two people doing everything.
BTW, the live timing was always set at 1 minute... it's just getting the timing operator to turn on live timing if it gets turned off or after a restart of AXWare.

Because not printing those 600 little slips of paper would so offset the impact of us racing. The live web feed is nice but I'd rather have the slips. besides not everyone has a "smart" phone .... mine is just about as dumb as I am ;D What He said. I can barely answer mine.

Rich, very much so. I forgot to add that we were talking of trying to announce over radio as well as pa, but that isn't going to happen

The club does have an FM transmitter... and we're looking at some other options to get PA into the paddock area.

I had hoped to learn how to set up the FM transmitter when I came up to the hillclimb, but apparently it wasn't even used there either. Good to hear we're exploring other options... that little PA we have has seen better days (probably around the summer of 1973, if I had to wager a guess)

The FM setup is simple. Just hook up coax for antenna, and input is RCA from the PA. Thats it. I will bring it to the BOD meeting so it can get back to the trailer. Had to do a lot of contact cleaning to get it working again before hillclimb, and then we did not have announcer.

Once you change, you will never want to go back. It's like being a virgin, you don't know what your missing. that's not the problem ... I'm well aware of how to use the smart phones ... I chose not to use them ... I refuse to be "on call" 24/7 ... my phone is only on when I'm traveling ( Net10 pay as you go) so a smart phone and the monthly payment plan would be a huge waste of money ... at least for me .... ;D

You know if we use the local WiFi option (which I'm working on now) you can just use an iPad or Android tablet or MP3 player with WiFi and a web browser or even a laptop if you want! </DevilsAdvocate>

Alright, so I think I have a solution ready to test out at ZMax. I've tried to make it as idiot-proof as possible because we do have some idiots wandering around in our ranks Basically, you connect to the "ccr-results" SSID with your phone/tablet/mp3 player/laptop/toaster/etc. When you open your browser, it literally doesn't matter what URL you request.... you get results. I'll bring all the equipment to ZMax to test it out. If it's actually used, I'll bring it with me to all events in the future.
