Hello everyone, Looking forward to running my first autocross in a long long time this coming weekend. Here is my question. I have heard from a few different people that I have talked to that you have to be 12 to do a ride along. My 12 year old son is really looking forward to riding with his Dad at the autocross at ZMax. Can someone confirm this is true? I was also told both parents have to sign the waiver. Does that need to happen before registration closes at 9am? My wife will be bringing my son out. I just want to make sure she gets there in time and that my son can ride with me. (would be easier to know now rather than dealing with my sons disappointment on the day of the event. If there is someone I need to call or email just point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide.

Per our supplemental rules:
"Passengers must at least 12 years old, and any passenger younger than 18 must have the Minor Waiver form signed by both parents/guardians. The parent/legal guardian signatures must be witnessed by either the registar at the event, a safety steward at the event, or the Event Chair. If the form is signed off site, then it must be notarized."
"A novice driver, a driver with less than one years experience, is not allowed to have a passenger unless it is an instructor."
I am not sure how you would be classed.

Thanks for the info. Well even though it has been a while since i last auto-crossed. I did win G stock NCAC championship in 88-89. Won a Solo 2 divisional in Talladega. and finished 9th in the Nationals at Salinas. Hoping that counts for something but we will see.

Mike Coolong It's probably safe to say you aren't a Novice class driver. So that shouldn't be an issue. And I'll likely be helping run registration so if you guys just sign the form their it shouldn't be any problem. AJ can give you a concise answer though, but I don't foresee any issues arising. Definitely looking forward to seeing your Speed3 run. I wouldn't mind going for a ride along myself. Maybe even sneak a fun run or two in it

Mike, I'm working on emailing you back with correct information. I touched some of it so far.
Minor waivers don't have to be notarized. If they are, they are good for one year. If they are not, they must be signed in front of an "official" on site.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone My only concern was not knowing when i was going to run. I am going to have my wife bring my son out. I figured it would just be easier to get everything signed and notarized. (someone at my wife's work is a notary)
I am going to measure my sons head tonight to try to figure out what size he would be in a helmet. I'm trying to figure out if i have to go buy my son a helmet. If a loaner helmet is close to the right size will it be OK if we just strap it in tight as we can?

p.s. On a side note i am extremely excited to be auto-crossing again.

I believe that we will request that your son remain off-course with the exception of the ride-along. If you work grid or start it may be OK but youngins on a hot course is a little unnerving to me. I will let our safety stewards handle that one though.
If you go ahead and sign/notarize that minor waiver and hand it off to me or Travis at the gate then we willbe good to go. Otherwise, when your wife gets there with your son, run back up to the gate and both of you sign the form for me or have her go straight to the trailer with you to sign the form. Everything should be peachy!

I agree with Andy. He's right a 12 year old on a hot course is not good. We often have spin outs. I know at metrolina we have had drivers cut off a whole corner and come right by workers. But one idea is to get your son into jr kart. That way he can race along with you and it will prepare him for driving as he gets older. I know there are always great deals out there on karts. Just idea

Minors are not allowed in any hot area technically.

Yup , no minors in grid or on course while cars are moving , if he is doing a ride a long we need him escorted to and from the grid spot and ask that he and an adult remain in that grid spot .

Ok I will make sure he stays with me either in the car or right at the car with me in between runs. He wants to help me mark my tires and check air pressures.

Here are the answers.
Minor Waivers 4.14-A A minor is one under the age of majority in the state of the event being held. All minor waivers must be signed in front of an SCCA Member at each event. An ALL EVENT waiver may been obtained from national office. Both guardians must sign the waiver if the minor is to be a driver/passenger. Otherwise, only one guardian signature is required.
Ride along 1.3.2 D. Passengers allowed if ... 1. At least 12 years of age 2. Vehicle passed technical inspection 3. Wears a properly fitting seat belt and helmet 4. Has completed all necessary credentials. Necessary credentials as stated elsewhere in the rule book. Waiver(majority or minor), SCCA Member(full or weekend), and any others required by the region or facility.
There you go.
Also, the debate of legal driving age for a full bodied car has been discussed. There is not minimum age requirement. The only restriction is that competitors must be either a part of the Junior Driving Program or possess a valid drivers license. NCDMV states that a valid drivers license is a document that displays that one has passed a driver test given by a state government facility.
