I have an 03 Mustang Gt with 245/45/17 tires. Would I get better handling at Autocross events by going one size up to on my stock tires to 255/40/17? Or keeping 245/45/17 stock front and get 255/40/17 wider on rear only? Or just stay with to my stock tire size? Would going wider make me lose my turning radius? Thanks.

I'm sure there is some point of diminishing of returns but personally I run 295x30x18's on all 4 corners of my Mustang. I would go with 315's if I thought there was a chance of zero rub. I think quite a few of the national guys run these sizes.
However, having said that, the kind of tire can be just as important. A Hoosier A6 in a 245 is going to out perform a street tread tire just about of any size.
You may want to post what class you're trying to run in etc. The staggered setup is if you're trying to fight a loose condition. However, you can counter that with adjustable swaybars etc. Again, really going to be about class you're trying to setup for and how competitive you're trying to be.

FYI. 18's are the smallest wheel I can run to clear the Brembo's on my car.

Frosty, Thanks for your help. I am competing in ESP class and running street tires. Glad to here you can run bigger tires 295/30/18 on the mustang. So I am sure that going up one size on mine to 255/40/17 from 245/45/17 should be just fine.
All of my tires need replacing soon, so I figured this would be the best time to change the tire size. So I will change all 4 wheels to the 255/40/17. I can't wait to see how it does. Thanks.
