We seem to have a continual problem enticing workers to staff our TT events. We have tried a number of enducements but no particular one or combination seems to make a difference.
What do you want to see? Tell us what floats your boat!
1. Worker Lunches 2. Worker Social Sat night 3. Worker Track Time 4. PDX one Day, Work one Day 5. Worker Payment (How much per day) 6. Worker Gifts 7. Something Else?

Probably not the right forum since I'm one of the very few CCR people that works club races/TTs, but.... here we go. 1 & 2) Anything but Subway!!! I know it's tough especially when you're trying to get lunch out to workers on corner, but OH MY GOD is it tiring seeing a box of random Subway sandwiches at lunch at every single event! At the hillclimb, the snack wagon went around giving out chips, Lance cookies, and at one point burgers and hot dogs. THAT was awesome! 3 & 4) It might help. I know I've seen SCR do a "drive one, work one" weekend at a pretty good discount at their TTs. NASA does "work 2 weekends, earn a free drive" or something like that, too... and I've heard people work NASA events solely for the free seat time. 5) Anything is better than nothing. I know a lot of regions do free hotels for workers and that's AWESOME. But if you're local, or you're camping, or the region just doesn't do the hotel thing, there has to be something. $30 a day is the standard I've seen from a few events. Personally, I've worked Charlotte Motor Speedway twice without receiving anything.... and despite being promised a hotel for the 13hr I ended up sleeping in my car in 20 degree weather (again without pay).... and it really does kinda leave a bad taste in one's mouth. 6) My wife wants a t-shirt. She's complained that we've done 3 events this year that asked for t-shirt size on the signup page and she's yet to get a t-shirt which she complains incessantly about. Event shirts make GREAT worker gifts and souvenirs. Other than that, worker gifts are a nice little touch, but certainly not necessary. 7) Umbrella girls! Personally I'd love to make it down to Little Talladega for an event, but with all the AutoX days I do and the travel for that, I try to keep my flagging fairly local. For TT, you might be able to rope in the AutoX crowd if you get out there and associate with them. TT is a nice step up from AutoX... still fairly low risk since you're not going wheel to wheel with any ITS/Spec Miata lunatics... and that's probably where you're going to recruit from for workers and competitors. Reach out to the AutoX community.... bring some cars out to events and do AutoXs (especially ridiculous cars like Ted's Jedi or Bowland's BBR Shark) and get people interested in what Time Trials are about. Then if you work on something with the track time or work one/drive one weekends, you can hopefully increase participation on both sides of the wall.

I'm with Steven in that I know I'm one of the few AutoX'ers from our Club that enjoys working the Club Races/TT when I can. I've only done two events, but it's a lot of fun for little work. And it's the second best seat in any race. Plus the opportunity to eventually flag races such ALMS is a win in my book. 1. Worker Lunches The provided lunch and snacks for on course are great, but a variety would be good. I love Subway as much as the next person, but too much of a good things can ruin it. 2. Worker Social Sat night Social gathering with the drivers, workers, event coordinators AND beer...'nuff said. 3/4. Worker Track Time/PDX one Day, Work one Day I'm grouping these two together because they're practically the same thing. I personally would LOVE this option above all else. You can ask Duck and pretty much anyone else at the Memorial Day Weekend race at CMP because they saw a 5'4" white blur running from subs to my car; during the one hour lunch breaks Saturday and Sunday I would scarf down a sub in about 2 minutes and spend the last 58 doing touring laps with the pace car and on my own. I loved working and meeting the new people and of course watching the races, but my favorite part of those two days was doing laps of the track over and over and over and over. I even put my AutoX magnets on my car so I felt like a race car driver haha 5. Worker Payment (How much per day) I'm not opposed to monetary compensation for standing feet away from Spec Miatas and ITB cars doing thier craziest driving. 6. Worker Gifts I wouldn't mind a shirt or something of that sort from the events. I like showing off my SCCA and CCR 'pride' and the more ways I can do it the better. I've worn my 2012 NCAC shirt at least 4 times no and it was only a 2 weeks ago. (I washed it in between each time I wore it, don't freak out) 7. Something Else? Duckles hit this one on the head...more females. And dare I say less clothing?

I work the hillclimbs and will continue to do so. My only complant is the lunches. Sandwiches are ok but put the fixens on the side. Not everyone likes the same thinks. Event tshirts would be nice but i understand that they are there to make money for the event so we can keep running them. Chad

Mr. Farr: The guys above pretty much layed it out.
If you want to get more CCR worker participation, help us out with getting a PDX/TT event set up in CCR Territory (Read that CMS). Then run that work/drive deal. I predict good participation from the membership (and if properly promoted) from quite a few newcomers. Once people see what the worker deal really entails, they'll be more likely to volunteer in the future.
SCR's September event at CMP was going to be the closest one to most of us, and it came together so late that it didn't happen.
In my opinion, PDX is the missing link in CCR's otherwise excellent programs right now. I know that's a slightly different direction than your post was aimed at... But I think its all related.

That would be the next Charlotte CCR Region social. The several members that have responded combined aspects of all of CCR's programs as to worker amenities. The Directors and event chairs work hard to make each event a financial success. To keep participation/entries up, it is important to offer a value based program that allows affordable entry fees. That said, we always are looking for the best fit as to what considerations can be offered for each specific event. Worker input is solicited and will be considered by the BOD and event staff.

The TT Committee will be working on next years schedule soon, hope to bring CMP back into the fold. Talk to your Region BOD. It takes almost the same amount of people (no T&S) to run a PDX as it does a TT. We have been trying to combine a PDX with each TT but have not received a tremendous PDX response. Still, we will keep trying. Having enough instructors for a PDX is the challenging factor. In all the years I ran HPDE (PDX by another name), the instructors got free track sessions and lunch. We (TVR/AL) have done free SOLO tickets in the past. Maybe shirts is a key element that we have been forgetting. At Crow Mtn, we have bag lunches prepared and delivered up to the workers on the hill. Different ones each day.

For those of you interested in PDX, the TT committee does not set any of the events or sites. The regions decide on whether or not to have events, and at what sites. CCR has decided that a PDX is not cost effective, and therefore will not do any. In their defense, to have a PDX and or TT would cost a fortune. When I was RE 10 plus years ago, rental of CMS, was over $7000.00 per day just for the track, let alone insurance and other expences. At most PDX events 50/60 cars is a good number, so who wants to pay $250 to $300 per car to do PDX.

CMS for one and a half days is about a $24,000 rental expense more or less, depending on dates and options. For 60 entries we would need upwards of $400.00 per driver. A stand alone event would give up to twelve hours of track use. The BOD has discussed working in something in conjunction with a race weekend but since the track cannot be used before noon on Sunday, there is not much flex time. We are going to look at other facilities in the near future to evaluate possibilities. If something is found that is financially feasible, possibly Worker vouchers can be worked in.

Can the track not be used AT ALL before noon, or is it a "race engine" issue? Like, at CMP, they were doing "touring laps" for street cars during the quiet period on Sunday at the Buck Muse and Memorial Monster this year.

No motors running at all until after 12:00 at CMS. Same rules you get at ZMax. We will look at some options for next year. I looked at the possibility of including a PDX group in the test day schedule for Friday at CMS. This year was first day for a test and it was run by the track. Options are also being considered for something at CMP if we can juggle the numbers. Worker compensation: CCR pays $40 per race gas money or a motel room (double occupancy). If you did not get either you failed to ask, period. We take care of our workers and the anti Subway vote has been registered. ;D We went to Subway after the anti lunch shack, anti Pizza, anti whatever asked for fresh meat sandwiches. We will gladly do something else if you can find it in Kershaw or Camden. There is obviously more budget at a Road Race than a PDX/TT for extra worker gifts. We all do those for the love of the sport, not for the glorious gifts. We volunteer our time and money in most cases to further the clubs programs and build new members. I come home from a hillclimb dead tired and loving it!! PS. Duck is the only one that got a sub, everyone else had bacon wrapped sirloin.

Sorry. I negotiated the meals for the hillclimbs and it was my responsibility but to be clear, no one got a 6 inch sub both days. As you know at Dragon II, I was unhappy with LUNCH service, delivery time and quality of food for our workers. I promised I would do better. We moved the business from that restaurant to Blimpie with chips, cookie and drink for Saturday Lunch with bacon wrapped sirloin dinner Saturday night. And Sunday lunch was BBQ sandwich, chips, cookie, drink. We had a REALLY good breakfast served at top of mountain both days...one of the best that I can recall. Our worker perks (food, nice hotel, shirts, knives) are better than any hillclimb I have ever attended in South or North and I've been to more than a few. Sorry that not all were pleased. If someone is dissatisfied with what they are getting, please email me and let me know your problems and suggestions. I'll certainly be glad to consider for future plans. Thanks again to all those who worked the event. It was a pleasure to have you and ...from all the emails and comments, sounds like everyone had a blast! Craig's original post was asking what can be done to encourage workers for ALL of our SEDIV Time Trial Events. They would like to have some of our event staff come to other region's events and we would like to have some of their staff come to ours. We have some great events and great people working these events that make them happen... and the reason they come is the enjoyment they get out of it . Being involved and sharing motorsports events with family... the "real" family and the SCCA family. Not for a nice room or the food. We worked our rears off at Dragon III... some people were there TUESDAY cutting grass and weedeating... and we had a blast. As tired as I was Monday...I was already excited about the next one! See you at Dragon IV!

I don't know a single person that was disappointed with the way we were treated at the Dragon III. While it was yet another sub for lunch on Saturday, it was more than made up for with the snacks we were brought throughout the day, the dinner on Saturday night, and the lunch on Sunday. I hope nothing I said came off as a complaint about the Dragon III! I will second Chad's request for subs to not come loaded with tomato, mayo, lettuce, etc.... but that's a rather insignificant problem, ultimately. Make them closer Seriously though, with the number of AutoX events I do and other crap, I have a comfort zone of how far I'm willing to travel. I went outside that comfort zone and made the 6 1/2 hour trip to Havelock, NC for the NCAC because we needed more people to represent CCR. Add to that this TGPR weekend being the same weekend as an AutoX event and the 13 Hour at VIR (that I had planned on working before the AutoX event came up)... and that's completely out.

Totally agree on distance and time. I would love to work and run a LOT more events but... distance and time gets in the way. IT even gets tough to plan events as you can't pick a date without stepping on someone else... and the open dates are a week before or a week after. There are only so many available weekend dates in the year.
That said... no where else in the world I'd rather live ... and no one else I'd rather spend my available weekends with than sportscar people! ;D

.......... That said... no where else in the world I'd rather live ... and no one else I'd rather spend my available weekends with than sportscar people! ;D 10-4 to that good buddy! It is an awesome problem to have: Events scheduled from February all the way to early December. Often every weekend. We actually have to choose! I really hope that our comments and suggestions (well, mine anyway) are taken in the spirit that they have been given. I think we all know that not every single desire can be granted. I understand that we have a responsibility to keep CCR financially sound as well. Too many events that loose money will kill the regions finances, and we can't have that. All that I ask is that we keep trying and looking for alternatives, and not just say "it can't be done".

I, for one, applaud all of you for your comments and responses to an obvious concern about the cituation!!! People comunicating is what gets things done. And by the responses from our BOD members, we can see they ARE listening!! And as for the Dragon III, I also had fun working from Wednesday on, mowing grass, blowing off pavement, moving barriers etc. Only a few of us have the time to be able to do this, but we also meet great people in doing so. We as competitors and workers alike owe TED, more thank you's than are possible for all the time he has invested in the DRAGON!!!

I didn't have a complant. I just said the only thing that i didn't like. When you are a picky eater you get used to it. I always bring enough snacks to get me though an event. I would never complain about some free. I missed an autocross at our best lot to do the last hillclimb. I will try to work them next year too. I would work more event but coming from east TN can make it a long trip. I try to get more people envolved all the time. I would like to carpull with someone to help lower the cost to everyone envolved. I don't think anyone else comes from up this way. I could meet up with a group in Asheville. Then carpull from there. That would help. I also have to juggle family time and my racing and they don't like me being gone all weekend. Chad

It's actually part of the reason we struggled for workers this year, as a few people wouldn't come back after getting stiffed last year. Talking to the couple that came down from DC and worked timing, they didn't even know a hotel room was an option either.

Here is my take. Jeannie and i were financially strapped , our fault. The club supplied a room. We supplied gas. Cool. We do not ask a lot. We expected nothing else. We received tee-shirts. We received a great meal saturday nite, thanks to Huddle House. We would do it all over again. In fact we intend to be there next year. Love the excitement. On my retirement checque, we can only do so much, if that includes helping the club, Jeannie and i will always choose the club.

Registration page says to email Vicki (registrar) if you plan to work. Every registered worker got an email asking if they needed lodging or gas money. Workers we know that come all the time are just added to room list per their request. Some waited until the Thursday we were leaving for the site to register or added the spouse last minute and all rooms were booked. Some just show up and say "you knew I would be here" and expect us to have a room ready. We do the best we can, but it takes cooperation by all to make this work. Worker perks will be listed on registration page for all future events until we reach our limit on preregistration.

My suggestion would be that there be a worker entry form just like the driver. Each worker would sign up, check off which options they need from what are offered. Then be listed on the worker list just like the driver. CCR is not "given" any of the perks they offer, ie motel rooms, free gas, etc, they must pay for these. By registering in a timely fashion, CCR can get accurate counts on rooms and or per dieums, the everyone can be on the same page. Many people think they just sign up for a bunch of rooms just in case, which is partially true, but they do not just take a wild guess. If you are going to work, "COMMIT", don,t wait to see if there is something better to do, then decide. Doesn,t cost a thing to sign up, and you might be the one everyone is waiting on to decide if they are coming! Thanks to all the workers, as you do a great job, but you can do even better by being a "Work Force", versus just random workers. Remember, all the officials of the event are just like you, "Workers", most of whom wear many hats, and they commit before the event is even announced.

As a worker who comes out to 3-5 events a year here is my list.
1. Wokers Lunches. CMP try to find something other than subway. As for the hill climb the box lunch is not bad for 1 day but its not for both. Herd it was good last time but I was autocrossing. Side Note. Always make sure to have some more. Herd of workers not getting lunch as they have run out. I have never had that happen but just make sure.
2. Saturday Night Social. Yes yes and more yes. Feed the workers a good dinner. My way there is nothing wrong with some burgers, dogs and some beer. Does not have to be that good of beer. Yuengling is a good choice. I was at the CCR Memorial Monster. Did not know what was up but there was like 10 people at the social and a whole bunch of miller light. I ended up going to party with some of the racers. I have been to all the SCR events for a while and for some reason the social is always more fun. See what they do and do that. The hill climb was decent for 1 and 2. Tho I split off early to go do a nice drive on the roads.
3. Worker track time would be nice. I know of hour lunches at CMP. But its usually enough time to eat and talk for a few mins before we go back out. So would be nice but I don't know were you could fit it in. I know it would cost extra for the EV workers would have to be on duty. So makes its very intresting.
4. PDX work drive. I feel like this is one of the biggest ways to get people on track. We need some good events. I dont know if CCR is planning to do an CMP track event but it needs to be done. I am a newer SCCA member of only 3 years. I have now been getting on track. But with no SCCA events that are local I may make the move to Turn One, PCA, NASA, other events say like subaru etc etc. However I know many people who have started with a work one drive one and got hooked. Some are now in the Time Trial program. I know Buccaneer Regions TT event lost money with 26 cars. You need about 35 to make profit there. They need to add a pdx program to that time trial event. With out pdx there is no step up in scca. And without that you don't get new drivers. No new drivers and the program will start to die. Hopefully the 2013 season has some nice local PDX/TT events as I am going to try to work, work/drive or drive.
5. Worker Comp, I think its good to either get a motel double occupancy or cash. I have also worked for autox events or put towards track time. Cash $30-40 an event works for me. Covers my gas to the event. I have learned to camp out. No biggie to me.
6. Worker gifts are nice. Its nice. Maybe just some shirts or something. Up to you guys but its does not really to big of an issue.
7. Something else, After working some of your events you guys need to get some smoother events. Hill climb has not been to bad. Herd yall fixed the radio problem so that was nice. So tired of relay to relay a message. Good news that is fixed so we don' spend 1-2 hours going can you hear me now. No how about now.
As for the road race events. I do like to keep track of the race events and what order everything is in. No biggie if things change they day before. But I can't remember how many times the schedule changed at the memorial monster. I even herd it from the drivers. Make a smooth event and stick to a schedule. Sure you can make a change Saturday night if something did not work. But not Saturday night, then Sunday morning, then at lunch. Was confusing me to keep track of the schedule since it kept changing.

Thanks Kyle... appreciate the viewpoint and thoughts. There is a sincere desire to raise the level of CCR events... that is not easy as everyone involved has a different viewpoint, likes and dislikes... and event managers have constraints they must work with. Budgets, track time, rules, safety, responsible handling of club's money, etc. It's a lot more difficult than it may seem. A few things I did want to mention : 1. We appreciate our workers GREATLY. While they are doing what they do as a volunteer, they are benefiting CCR and SCCA by helping to put on great events and the profits from all our events go to fund ... ALL of our events from Solo to Time Trial to Road Racing. If we were paying people to work events, it becomes business, takes a lot of the pleasure out of it and would make it hard to justify events. For example : a hillclimb event worker - double occ. room for 2 nights, lunches, worker dinner, t-shirt, water, snacks, etc. that adds up to over $100 per weekend. With a $250, entry fee, and SCCA getting sanction, per car fees, insurance ... that leaves less than half of all income for site rental, marketing, expenses, security guards, parking assistance, licenses/permits from DOT, US Forestry, etc. We can barely break even with 45 cars... and as crowds grow and entries increase...we need more workers. (This kills all hopes of umbrella girls I faithfully add to our budget requests... ) Frankly, I don't want people to come WORK. I want them to come, enjoy being a part of a great event and hang out with a great bunch of people...our SCCA family. By helping with each event, our volunteer event staff is helping our club succeed and generate money that goes for new equipment, vehicles, trailers, cones, radios for ALL of our events. If it's work, you SHOULD get paid and we can't afford to pay you. 2. PDX - We all agree that there is a need in the Carolinas for PDX. The problem is that historically, no one who is running them in the Carolinas has been able to do it and break even... even when it was combined with TT, CCPS, etc. There have been MANY individual PDX events in the Southeast that have lost thousands... and Boards have a responsibility to handle the club's money responsibly. If drivers are not coming out and not participating, no region should continue to lose large amounts of their money to fund program events. There have been some creative approaches used by combining events with TTs, road races and that has not worked, attendance has been low, instructors had to be given free events or discounts for working... all that added up to losing money. We all agree we want PDXs and we need PDXs but no one can afford to lose money when turnouts are low. But...there is some good news! There are some plans being discussed for some new PDXs in Southeast Division for 2013. The SEDIV Time Trial Committee and several Regional boards are working on some plans so stay tuned... I urge you, if you really want PDXs, make sure you come and run these events and bring friends. It is one of SCCA's objectives to provide the opportunity to pursue your motorsport's passion. If you support these events and want them, we CAN make them happen... but if support is not there, then region's discontinue offering them. That is true for road races, autocrosses, hillclimbs as well. 3. Road Race Schedule - when I started working road races, it used to bother me that schedules were ALWAYS off. At one event I attended, I noticed there was no schedule in supps that showed times. I asked the event manager "Why are there no times listed on schedules?" He said "because... if you put it in writing, you have to stick to it. We can't control the time schedule due to wrecks and clean-ups." If you have a 15 minute practice session, you can reduce it by 2 minutes to get back on schedule. This is a minor adjustment and race chair and stewards do this regularly to "Tweak" us back on schedule. BUT... if we have a 4-5 car incident... and it takes 20 minutes to get clean-up and oil dry down to where track is safe, you can't recover from that with a few tweaks. It sounds easy to put out a schedule and stick to it... but it is harder than you'd think. Value to a driver who pays a large race entry fee is partially... getting the track time. Race schedules are always estimated times ... this is true for all races as there are too many variables outside of control of event management. We all bend a bit and flex a bit and we make great events. The amount of compliments that we received from drivers (especially out of region) and the compliments NATIONAL office received tells us...we are on track. Thanks for input from all. Good ideas expressed here and better understanding. We are all proud of the events we ran this year in all areas... working with people like Rick & Jan Mitchell, Don Drennon, Tony & Brian, Sue Coleman, Steve & Vicki, Rich Little, Rich Messick, Robert & Barbara Mays, Steven & Cyndi, AJ & Michael, Robert, John Willes, Mark & Sue, Scott Franklin, James & Jeannie, Bill & Hunter Lemmond ... so many others... it doesn't seem like work. Seems like FUN! Thanks to all who have helped to staff and volunteer at CCR events this year. We are looking forward to 2013 EVEN more!
