Thank you! The competition was tough! Jeff Eng provided me with an INCREDIBLE car! I just drove the ever living piss out of it and hung with national champs.

The Carolinas were well represented in the Shootout. Sorry if I miss anyone.

The comradery between us all was to be beaten by none. We all helped each other between pairings in respective brackets. An amazing sight! One or two tire pressure gauges and up to three water sprayers. Just wow.

17th place in LCQ.... SO CLOSE!!! Would have had to run Kraig in the first round, so it's not like I would have made it far though

It really was a sight to see. As you got further in the bracket, the time to do things became VERY SMALL! Once you came in, you had 2 minutes, then you've gotta run again. For Kraig and AJ who were on Toyos, we needed them cooled off as much as possible, so when the car came in, Wes Emerson and I were waiting with sprayers. Hood gets popped, tires get sprayed, intake got sprayed if necessary, Kraig is checking his pressures... Jeff is checking AJ's pressures, and there's a swarm of 5-6 of us around the car at any given point.

Even if I didn't make it into the shootout, I had a blast there and can understand why people enjoy national level events. Almost everyone I met was incredible, and it was as much fun running around crewing for Kraig, Tim, Geoff, AJ, and Casino as I think it would have been actually driving myself.

Good job guys! On Sunday I watched AJ put down a 43.5 and thought "damn, that's a really fast run especially for STC." Glad yall did so well.

I had my head up my a$$, hitting cones every run. Coned away a trophy in STR. No where close to the PAX time of Cassino's or AJ's, though.

Dixie Tire Rack Match Tour featuring the Evolution Super Shootout Presented by BFGoodrich Tires

So, event number one of the Tire Rack SCCA Solo season is in the books, and we start the 2013 season off with the new Match Tour format featuring the Evolution Super Shootout presented by BFGoodrich Tires.

The weather was perfect to kick things off with highs around 80 and mornings in the low 50’s. The event started with some great action in Stock Classes, where Sam Strano and his StranoParts Chevrolet grabbed the lead in Super Stock and topped the index early. Heat One also proved to be great for AS driver Bryan Hertweck, where he took his new Porsche Cayman to the front on run one and never looked back. But the real action was in L3, where Laura Campbell, co-driver Taylor Jordan Towns, and Teddie Alexandrova battled for the top spot during all three runs. Eventually Laura Campbell would take the win, but only due to a cone on her co-driver.

Heat Two had plenty of tight competition in all classes, and in CS Jason Stroud and Dat Nguyen showed the MX-5 was the car to have this weekend over Tom Deady's RX8 and Jadrice Toussaint’s FRS. Jadrice questions the ability of the “twins” to compete in CS, but thinks that in STX they look promising. DS stock action showed the power of the Audis, as James Feinberg and Mike Casino made Craig Wilcox the meat in a TT sandwich, with both of their co-drivers to follow. With the strength of the TTs in the Tour format, they’ll surely be the car de jour in Pro Solo.

In STF we had some great action, with the top four drivers all within .300, but when all was said and done, Eric Sienkiewicz took the win over Todd Freeman, Mike Feeney, and Thomas Austin. In L1 the battle was between Velma Boreen in her Aim Tuning Miata and Ginette Jordan’s Karcepts OS Giken Honda Civic. Ginette put up a great fight, but Velma took the win by just .061, with Tracy Lewis rounding out the top three. Other notable action from heat two included Eric Campbell who took a huge win in DSP and locked down the number two qualifying position in the Shootout, as well as Martin Kriz in his PTuningSubaru, who won his class by a substantial margin for the 7th qualifying position.

In the third heat, the real action was in the Street Touring category, and in STR we had 22 drivers competing to take the win, but when the dust settled Jason Collett took the top spot by just .061 over Dave Marcus, who ran his fastest run on his first of the four runs. In STC we had AJ Snyder taking the win by just .090 over his co-driver Jeff Eng in their Kestrel Racing Honda Civic, but the battle wasn’t just between the two co-drivers, as Nariah Tracy was just .097 back from Eng. STS action was a battle between Darrin DiSimo in the John Brown owned Mazda Miata, and Tom O’Gorman in Dave Montgomery’s Full Throttle Indoor Karting Honda CRX. O’Gorman laid down a third run that would give him the class win by .327 over DiSimo, and lock him into the 10th qualifying position for the Shootout. Big props to Andy Thomas in GS where he took advantage of the four run format, and dropped 1.1 seconds on his final run, to take his first National Event win over Stephen Haupt.

The fourth heat started with STX action where Jim Fossum, Jason Ruggles, and Bryce Merideth showed the sky isn’t falling yet, as they pushed the Subaru BRZ driven by Mike King back to the fourth position, with Fossum taking the win. Keith Marx from STU seems to also be a fan of the four run format, as he pulled out a flyer in his Team Jester STI’s final run to takes the win over Jed Peterson. In SSP Joe Tharp continued where he left off in Lincoln by taking the top spot over Mike “Junior” Johnson and Courtney Cormier. Tharp took the top spot by .433, and coned away a time that would have put him clear of the class by almost one second. L2 competition saw SSL drivers Shelly Monfort and Cheryl Davis take the top two spots, and just .015 behind Davis was Tara Johns in her ESL Mazda Miata. In SSM Matthew Glagola in the Lotus Elise and Steve Hoelscher in the Race-Keeper sponsored Mazda Miata battled it out, with the Lotus getting the better of the Miata by .547. SMF was a great battle between the Karcepts Honda Civic of Jinx Jordan, and Michael Jones in his Columbia Gold Honda Civic, affectionately known as “the snot rocket.” Jordan laid down the early fast run, but Jones came back on his third run to take the top spot. But things changed on the fourth and final run where Jordan regained the top spot and took the win by .011 and secured the 5th qualifying position in the Shootout. While FM wasn’t full of competitors, Darren Seltzer and Gregory Shumaker didn’t let that hold them back, as Seltzer took the class win, and the number one qualifying position in the Shootout.

With the Class competition setting the top two brackets of the Evolution Super Shootout Presented by BFGoodrich Tires, we headed into the Last Chance Qualifier. Here we saw Danny Kao in the StranoParts Chevrolet take an early lead in the index during the first heat, with Wes Jenrich (ES), Jack Burns (RTF), and Brian Meyers (FS) also making the top 16 from heat one. As we headed into heat number two Jadrice Taussaint (CS) and Mike Feeney (STF) joined the party. Heat three drivers grabbed the most positions during the LCQ, with Dave Montgomery (STS), Clay McCool (GS), Chris Harvey (GS), Robert Lewis (CSP), Zach Hill (STR), Geoff Walker (STR), and new LCQ top qualifier Kraig Klippel (STS), while heat four only netted three drivers to the bracket with Dennis Sparks (STX), Ricky Crow (STX) and Tim White (FSP) rounding out the top 16.

The Last Chance Qualifier bracket saw some tight competition throughout, with the final four coming down to Dave Montgomery vs. Danny Kao, and Wes Jenrich vs. Kraig Klippel. The Montgomery-Kao battle was decided by just .139 with Montgomery taking the win, and heading to the final round to face Klippel, who had shown to be the class of the bracket by consistently running the fast index times in each round. That trend didn’t change in the final round either, as Kraig took the win in convincing fashion to collect the $400.

Our Ladies and Random Draw bracket saw L3 Class Winner Laura Campbell advance to the final four to take on Cheryl Davis from L3, where Cheryl proved to be the top lady in the Shootout, netting two tires from BFGoodrich in the process. The Random Draws from this bracket saw two Street Touring cars advance to the final four, with Nelson Antunes in the STX Integra Type R taking on AJ Snyder in an STC Civic. AJ, fast all day, had coned away an opportunity to get in through the LCQ, but was clean throughout the Bracket to advance himself past Antunes and Cheryl Davis to take the bracket win and $400.

The B Bracket was up next where drivers 17-32 in the qualifying faced off to see who would make to the Final Four. With great battles in each round and all of the drivers very close on index, this bracket was the tightest competition. A great example was round two, where Elliot Harvey in a 1966 Datsun 2000 took on Darrin DiSimo in his Mazda Miata. DiSimo took the win and advanced to the final four, but only by a mere .019. Joining DiSimo in the final four of the B bracket was Jason Ruggles, Dat Nguyen, and Mike Casino. Ruggles faced off against Nguyen, and Casino was to face DiSimo. Both Ruggles and Casino both won their rounds easily, and faced off in the final round where Casino took the win, and the $400.

The A Bracket was filled with the 16 fastest drivers from the Saturday Class competition. Geoffrey Zimmer (FSP) found his way to the final four of the bracket by dispersing of Mike Jones (SMF) and Michael Kuhn (DSP), and would face off against Eric Campbell (DSP) who managed to take down Taylor Carr (SMF) and Tom O’Gorman (STS) on his way to the final four.Zimmer would go on to beat Campbell to make his way into the final round. Craig Wilcox (DS) had the toughest draw in many folk’s eyes, as he had to take on Sam Strano (SS) and Jinx Jordan (SMF) on his way to the top rounds of the bracket, and Darren Seltzer (FM) took care of Jason Stroud (CS) and co-driver Gregory Shumaker (FM) to make his way to the bracket’s final four where he faced Wilcox. Wilcox though was no match for Seltzer, as Seltzer the top qualifier, ran all of his runs in the bracket within .101, and would take out Zimmer as well to win the bracket, and the $400.

The final four was now set with Kraig Klippel to take on MikeCasino and AJ Snyder to run Darren Seltzer, with the winners going to the final round. Both Klippel and Casino had slow runs on their first of two, but both picked up quite a bit on their second runs, with Klippel topping Casino by .123 to advance to final round. AJ Snyder drew the short straw and had to run top qualifier, and Mr. Consistency Darren Seltzer, and once again Seltzer showed why he was in the final four, as he laid down two blistering runs, and easily advanced to the final round to take on Klippel. This left the two roommates Mike Casino, and AJ Snyder to battle for bragging rights, and the 3rd place position. Casino would go on to take the win, but the good news for both of these guys is they’ll have rent money for this month, as between the two, they brought home $1,100 in prize money.

The final round pitted Klippel against Seltzer, and Klippelclicked off another very consistent run, but Seltzer went out and knocked off his fastest run of the event, and took the win, by a 1.2 seconds on the index making him the first winner of Evolution Super Shootout Presented by BFGoodrich Tires, for the 2013 season. Considering that this is Seltzer’s first ever SCCA National event, I think it’s safe to say that the Match Tour format has enticed Darren to hit more big events in 2013.

Triad had the Feeneys , Jinx , Ginette , Feinberg , Gwen , Tom Deady and Klippel ( along with dual members AJ , Casino and Jadrice ,,thats right I have your membership form and we can claim you guys too )),,all put in great performances and dont forget how well the Carolinas did in class competition . AJ taking his Class along with Jinx and Feinberg .

Thank you Marcus. I found out last night that 43 was a damn fast raw time. I had a few 43.5s on Sunday. I was very conservative getting through the Bracket doing mid 44s. I know how coning away goes. I actually coned away 2nd in LCQ. I'm glad I did and got lucky draw.
