I was following the thread started by grok about which class would he be in and there was a discussion in it about tire class vs/ novice/vs stock. I now fit in stock class with my car, and I am eligible for novice. When figuring times in the novice class, is it strictly a pax multiplier that I would compete against? If I were in the tire class, would it be the same way, with the pax multiplier against all other tire class people? If not then how is the tire class scored, because all those different cars thrown in together does make it interesting but confusing to new people like me. Are more mods allowed in tire class? Is it basically the same structure as all other classes and the tires are limited, therefore tire class, and PAXed? If all you experienced guy had it to do all over again at the start, would you run in novice, or in your regular class with only three or four regulars and a shot at a trophy maybe?

Tire class is a RTP/PAX class and is handled in the same fashion as novice (so there is no reason to be in tire class-novice). Novice is a great way to learn how you are doing against others of similar experience. Tire class is a great way to compete against a broader range of cars and not just be limited to those in your particular class. So, for example, if George Bowland in AM wanted to have someone to play with - he could bolt on a set of Falkens and run the Shark against a Honda in GS-tire class. I realize that is an extreme example, but you get the idea.
Other advantage of tire class is you don't have to change wheels at the event unless you really want to play around with special tires for AX purposes. So you get an extra cup of coffee while the rest of us are playing with jacks and wrenches.

I'll be playing with jacks and wrenches too. I'm scared that the tires I'm running might pickup a screw or nail on the way there so I have a second set as well. I've got Hankook v212 for the event and some old rocks to get there on.
I know what pax is, what's RTP?

Novice classes are scored by multiplying the time by the PAX multiplyer for the class in which the car would have otherwise been classified.
The CCR Tire Class is done the same way, except - as I understand it - the class is open to stock class cars on tires with a minimum treadwear rating of 140. Other than tires, stock class rules apply.
Do not confuse the CCR "street tire" class with the various Street Touring classes. They are in the SCCA book, and do allow modifications beyond stock.

Okay, that clears it up. I did actually understand Street Touring, I read about it in the book. The tire thing was a little confusing, but I get it now. Think I'll stick to my class for the season. Thanks all.

I put the latest PAX/RTP index in a PAX thread under the Novice Forum. Check it out.
