Ok i was at one of the autox events and now im hooked, is there any where I can practice when there is no events being held and not get a ticket?
for example, are we allowed in the knights stadium parking lot or some other place out of the way?
Just want to know before i go and do something illegal

Unfortunately, practice is a precious commodoty in our sport.
No real place to do it legally without permission, and permission would be hard to come by without an insurance guarantee.

If you're willing to drive, there's an autocross within 4 hours of Charlotte almost every weekend.

Yep..that's the way to do it. Go to more A/Xes... Even if you set up a practice area somewhere on your own, it is hard to get the features correctly laid out and very hard to gauge whether or not you are learing anything. At an AX you have others to measure up against and you have a chance to work in a more controlled environment.
About the only thing i find helpful off course is to set up a small skidpad area in a local parking lot I can play on. Pretty much a "tire pressure" set up is all it is good for, doesn't help with learing how the car behaves under transition or other real conditions you see on an AX course.
