Hey all,
I read through the rules this afternoon and it seems that my limited current modifications would push me out of B Stock and into BSP (I've got an JWT intake as well as a Borla TD Exhaust right now...but am planning some future performance mods). But I was wondering if perhaps it would be better to run in the SM2 class. Of course, I'm a Novice....so I don't know if any of that matters. I'm guessing here....but even if you're a novice, you have to declare a vehicle class, right?
I really want to get into this....but I'm struggling a bit as to how. I've been to a couple autox's....and the process there seems straight forward enough, though the rules still seem like a bit of black magic to me. lol.

I'm not an expert on classing of the SM cars, but you will need to class your car even if you run as a novice. The novice classification puts in into a PAX (Relative performance index) with other novices in cars of various classes. This allows you to compete "equally" with the other novices. you can download the latest rulebook from SCCA.com under Solo events. It is worth reading because you want to make mods carefully to get the most out of whatever class you are in.
The main thing is to have fun and get out there and learn how to drive the car. The biggest performance improvement you can make is to get seat time and ask questions on how to improve. If you get the chance to have an instructor or experienced driver ride with you it may also help.

SM guidelines: Street Modified – The top of the “street” categories, SM allows anything from Stock, Street Touring, and Street Prepared allowances and also almost any drivetrain configuration as long as the engine manufacturer matches the body manufacturer (see Solo Rules for details). Four-seaters (BMW, Corolla, Civic, Integra, Neon, Supra, Talon, VW, etc.) run in SM and two-seat sports cars (Corvette, CRX, M Roadster, Miata, RX-7, MR2, etc.) compete in SM2. Subframe connectors, carbon-fiber hoods, cams, and turbo / supercharger kits are welcome, too.

If you can get the hippie to ride with you (Michael Bright - blue BS Z) he'll be the best instructor you can get. I think he helped Ken (100% BSN) cut a second or two off his times at Knights.

Ok....that makes sense on the class declaration. I suppose it also helps when you're ready to move out of the Novice ranks....as well as making sure you don't have Corvettes going against going against beaters for fairness.
Upon further inspection, the difference between SP and SM aren't all that much. Would you guys have a suggestion as to which I might want to run? Eventually I plan to put in a fully adjustable suspension, a BBK and a TT kit...which I know will bump me out of SP....but for now is there a reason I should run one versus the other?

Justin, run in Novice for a few times. I have run a few events in Novice and I am progressing pretty well with experience. It would help, if you can get Mike Bright to run with you, as heis VERY good. He also has a Z coupe. Tony is doing well in a black Z coupe, and I would be happy to take you a few rounds in my Z.
Your JWT puts you into BSP, but in novice it doesn't matter. PAX times are the same with all 350's.
Big thing is, I'm glad to see your interest, and maybe we can get some more of the CZC out to events. After all, we drive a SPORTS car!!!

Well...I had my first AutoX Experience yesterday down in Columbia. As expected...it kicked ass. Sunburnage and all. Ran as a Novice in the B Street Prepared class. Not entirely sure how I did...but my fastest time was a 49.6 on a course where most people were in the mid-40's or so. Real quick guys were in the low 40's.
Oh...DY.....I know of at least 3 CZC guys that want to AutoX. El Presidente has expressed interest...and another guy was asking questions in the thread I started about yesterday on the CZC board....and then our resident NightOwl has been talking about it for a while to....so maybe there will be some interest. I know I'm in for as much as I can afford.
Which will be more if more people buy my pictures. lol. C'mon people...help me feed my AutoX addiction! lol.

Well...turns out I suck pretty hard. They finally posted the results from the SCR event back on the 15th and I was basically dead last in the Novice Category (I beat one guy...because he didn't post any times).

Don't worry about your times at this point. First off, you had no DNF's, very good for a first timer. Secondly, you had no cones down, another good start. Remember, the more times that you participate the better you become. Our cars are tough to judge on course for a number of reasons. There is a slight throttle lag, that you have to anticipate. Did you inflate your tires for the runs? That will help cornering. Braking on Z's is pretty good, so you can go a little deeper than you think into the corner before applying them.
I really think you need to run more, and get comfortable with your car before you beat yourself up too much.

Ken, d-yankee, makes some good points. Sisco you need to enjoy first , make friends, smile. Run yourself, not others. By that i mean each run improved is a personal best.Have someone watch you and critique your runs. Ask a "fast" guy to ride with you, twice . Once to observe and after watching with him (or her) As others run, Once to advise. Best of luck, James
