I've been looking at helmets tonight and have come to find something rather odd. A regular open face helmet is DOT-218 and Snell M2000 rated.....but I have yet to find an Open Face Helmet with a face shield that isn't only DOT-218 rated.
The rules say Snell rating is required....so...what is it about the face shield helmet that precludes it from a Snell rating?

Probably something about the face sheild shattering and putting shards of plexi into your eyeballs... SNELL probably doesn't like that.

Wouldn't a visored, full face helmet be in the same boat then?
Not trying to be an ass or anything....just seems sorta curious to me.

if you have a windsheild in your car, why do you need a face shield anyway? Ever been popped by gravel or a tire marble at speed? I have. I'll always wear a full face mask after that. And I usually keep the visor closed, too. They my be rubber, but a tire marble bouncing off your melon at high speed is a real attention getter. ;D

Don't see how a tire marble can get inside my car at 50.

Heee hee..you haven't driven the Fiesta...them big sticky meatballs on the front toss up lots of stuff into the car. Don't have a big problem getting hit in the face, but there is a lot of stuff the race slix pick up once they are hot.
