When building the cage for FSP, can the two rear legs go through the floor and pickup the rear frame horns? That's the part where the transmission and motor meet. A good place to eliminate twist by criss-crossing the rear legs and mounting them there. It's more of a floor there, than a firewall. Thanks, greg

I'm looking in that section and I see under section E part 1 that if the car has a frame, you should mount to the frame, which would presuppose going through the floor to reach the frame. Does the VW chassis count as a frame? Otherwise I have to mount to the floor. What say ye?  |

I don't think you want to cut through the floor to attach the base of any leg of the cage. (though I don't have rulebook to hand/open). To be sure, you should go along to a club tech inspector and ask/show them what you plan to do.
A couple of things to bear in mind.
Can a tech inspector access the mounting (where you weld to frame) to fulfill their inspection?
By going through the floor, do you create an opening that exposes you to other rules, such as exposure of fuel tank to interior of car. (Would be frustrating to find you need a fuel cell just because you cut a hole somewhere).
But again, talk with a Tech inspector. Because the rules are open to some interpretation, you're very dependdent on what Tech will allow.

thanks for the info Martin. I was thinking of going to the frame only to pickup the tranny mount for stability. If I go to the floor then I can just add a torque rod from the tranny mount to the floor right where the cage/bar meets the floor and accomplish the same thing. You're more than likely right to say stay away from cutting holes, legal or not. Thanks again, Greg
