I and several other Chevrolet SSR owners are interested in running our cars at the PDX or one of the new Track Night events across the country. While equipped with roll-over hoops behind the seat, there appears to be some debate about our ability to run with the top down. Can someone with more knowledge than I give us a guideline on how to approach this with the local clubs?

If it's a convertible it must have a SCCA TT approved roll bar even for PDX. The car can run with the top down. I'm not sure about PDX but arm restraints must be worn in top down convertibles for TT.

First, it all depends on the supps of the event as to what they will allow to run. Some require a roll bar or running with the top up or a hard top, etc. Some do not allow Formula cars in a PDX. A roll bar is not required unless the supps state that it is. Read the event SUPPS!
The 2015 PDX TTR is fairly simple on the subject:
ELIGIBILITY OF VEHICLES: All vehicles must provide factory original (or better) seats that are securely mounted, seatbelts (SFI or FIA rated are recommended), and roll over protection for both driver and in-car instructor (if used). • Hardtop and Targa top vehicles are allowable. • Convertible vehicles operating with the factory roll over protection system are allowable. Other convertibles should have either a factory hardtop or a 4 point roll bar. If a roll bar is used, it should meet the roll bar requirements found in the TT/HC Driver Information TTR. • Vehicles that are in compliance with road race, solo, rally or time trial rules are allowable. • Drivers of open top vehicles should use arm restraints or run with the top up.
If the SSR says the roll hoops are factory roll over protection, then they meet the criteria above. It is the responsibility of the driver to provide that information about his car.
The Memorial Day event supps just talk about meeting the TTR. Suggest getting hold of Steve when you have a question about a specific car for the Memorial Day event.
TNIA generally follows the PDX rules but each track where it is being held can have some unique rules. Read the entry criteria for each event. If you have any specific questions, get hold of Heyward Wagner at SCCA.

Unless GM declares the seat backing tubes to be rollover protection, then the top up scenario is your best course of action. The CMP Memorial Day PDX should be an economical event fee wise to try out your cars. Being a fairly flat track, some of the turn entries ask for lots of braking. Good pads are necessary if you plan to drive aggressively.

Thanks to all of you. I'll do the research on the PDX before entering, and although legal for top down competition in SCCA solo events, I suspected some concerns at the track.
It'll be nice to see some of these out on course rather than getting polished in a dark garage.

If that version of the SSR has a hard top, it would be legal.

PDX/Track Trial participants can come early, camp free at CMP (electrical hookup per Track fees) and join the drivers, crew, workers and guests for the annual Memorial Day weekend social Saturday evening. There is plenty of Road Racing scheduled for the weekend providing opportunities to observe experienced competition drivers in action. If arriving after early registration hours, sign at the gate for a track wrist band and stop by SCCA registration later. Time Trial and PDX log books will be available at registration for those that need them. Also, we have just received a supply of the SCCA Time Trial stickers.

Thanks to all that came out and worked to enable the event last Monday on Memorial day. About 39 entries showed up and enjoyed great weather and all the Track Time they desired. Each session was (20) minutes on the 2.27 mile road course and drivers were able to get in many hours of seat time. Some even improved to their best time during the 11th session in the warmer part of the day. Class Track Records were set in a surprising number of classes despite the weathered pavement presenting less than optimal traction. Though many of the drivers were from the hosting region, quite a few were from Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. Those that did not make this one that desire to maximize their driving opportunities should consider this event next year.

Excellent event with all the track time you could want. A very big thank you to Brian, Steve, Vicki, Tony and all the rest, most especially the corner workers, stewards, T&S, etc who made this event happen.
