What are our chances of having the Chimney Rock H/C re-started in the near future & if so, what can all of us do to help this happen ?

We first would have to have documented commitments from sponsors that would cover our expenses beyond what entry fees could cover and following that, approval from the State Park to conduct one there. If those items were in place the region could seek volunteers to staff the event. The Division schedule would also need to be worked around. The budget for a Hillclimb at Chimney Rock park would be approximately what it would cost to do a road race weekend at Charlotte Motor speedway. The Hillclimb cost could be lower depending on the expenses incurred for the park facility use.

Equally important is the Race Chair who will spend most of a year doing nothing but making a new Hill Climb a reality. Do not underestimate the dedication and commitment that chairing a Hill Climb requires. Ask anyone who has taken race from nothing to reality.
Although chairing a Road Race is not simple, the track does have the basic infrastructure already in place. For a new Hill Climb, you have to create that infrastructure from scratch and that takes a lot of effort. If you do not believe that, then you have never chaired a HC and Road Race.

I'm glad someone asked this question. Did I read or dream that the tourist people there would like to have it again?

Yes you did hear a lot about it from a previous board member, who did do a lot of leg work and smoozing of the locals, but could not come through with the logistics and funding to get it done at the time! Don't loose hope, as it could some day come back, with the right group in charge! You have a good BOD starting up this coming year!!

Blair's post brings up a good question: what does it cost to host a weekend road race?

Cost to do a weekend road race is largely dependent on the track costs. For a 2 day event at Barber, our expense budget is $58-60K. And that is a No Frills budget.

If we were able to convince the State of NC and the park Ranger in charge of the said park to approve an event there, we could probably do one at $500.00 per entry if we got 80 advance entries. As with the previous events there, the entries would need to be prepaid.

WOWEEE! $40K to conduct a HC. The Park must be asking one hell of a lot for the privilege of doing the HC there. That sort of money is outrageous.

Yes, unfortunately it goes back the to the public facility site host asking "what's in it for me". It used to be how can more exposure be generated to promote site visitation by the owners.
