I finally remembered to track you guys down! I was playing golf at Rocky River in April and crested the hill looking for...some idiot's ball...definitely didn't hit mine into the road...and I saw a bunch of cars tearing through the cones at zMax. I was kicking myself for playing a boring game instead of being out there burning up tires. So here I am, ready to finally get involved in this gateway drug that they call autocross. Some background info: - Mechanical Engineer (Clemson '09)
- ex-BMW enthusiast (dat reliability doe)
- new Mazda enthusiast (poor man's BMW)
- currently living in uptown Charlotte (my neighbors think I'm insane because I'm always in the garage tearing apart my brand new car)
I never participated in an autocross because I was always afraid of breaking something on whatever BMW I was driving at the time. I spent way too much of my college days trying to decide between food and parts just to keep the damn things running. Now I have a real income and a Japanese car with laughably cheap parts. Ready to break it!

Glad to hear your lost golf ball has led you to path of enlightenment which is Autocross! Seriously though, we'd be glad to have you at our next event which will be at ZMAX again on June 18th (Pre Registration link is posted in the AutoX section of this forum). We actually have quite a few Clemson alumni that race with us, so you'll be in good company. Just come early (around 7:30 AM or so) and walk up to the registration trailer and someone there will be able to get you pointed in the right direction for tech inspection, course walks, and other event details. We have a Novice class that will allow you to get 5 runs instead of 4 and one of our awesome Novice chiefs (Robby Helms or Matt Hugenschmidt) will get you hooked up with a quality instructor so you don't get too lost in the sea of cones. If you haven't already, check out some of the sticky threads in the AutoX portion of our forum. That will provide additional details on getting ready for your first event. You can always ask questions here or on the CCRSCCA Facebook page as well. See ya in June!

I'll be vacationing in sunny Cleveland that weekend in June, but I should be around for the zMax event in July. Will that one be novice-friendly? I hate that I missed the class that you had in April.

Our Novice school in April certainly would've been a good event to learn the ropes of AutoX and get more runs, but we still try to make our "competitive" events Novice-friendly too. All of our events have a Novice class that you can register for, so our Novice chiefs will have your name/car and will make sure you're paired up with an instructor before your run group starts. Our Novice chiefs will also host special walks of the course before competition starts, so you can participate in those to get tips on the course and ask any questions you have.
I guess we'll see you in July instead!
