I own and drive a Production class race car in SCCA SARRC (Southeast Region) Club Racing events, and have been doing so for about 6 years now. I have a couple of good friends who go to almost every race with me as crew for the effort, and a couple more good friends who go to occasional races now and then when their schedule permits. I take the racing effort very seriously, and was fortunate enough to win the points championship for my class last year, but we also have a lot of fun at the same time.
Maybe you're currently doing autocrosses and/or time trials and you want to see what Club Racing is all about. Or maybe you figure you'll never have the time or money to go road racing yourself, but you would love the chance to be there and be right in the middle of the action.
If you think you might be interested in joining our team, here's the deal: We're not expecting you to be a seasoned pro (if you are, that's fine too!) But as long as you have a good attitude, are easy to get along with, and are a quick learner, we'll teach you everything you need to know. You'll be provided transportation to and from the race, your meals during the weekend and a place to sleep. (We take our sleeping bags and sleep on the floor of the enclosed race trailer at the track). Hey, it's not big budget racing- it's quite the opposite, actually. You'll get dirty, sweaty and your ears will be ringing by the end of the weekend. But if you've never been to a road racing event before, you'll be in for the time of your life.
You'll see more cool race cars in one place than you've ever seen before. You'll have some time to walk around the paddock area, check out the cars and talk with other people there. And you'll get to stand on pit road, on the observation deck on top of my trailer, or some or good vantage point during the on track sessions and see lots of great racing action!
In turn, you will be asked to work hard when you are needed, and be a valuable part of the overall team effort. You will help with things like unloading and loading the race car, setting up and taking down the portable canopies, checking the tires, brakes and alignment settings on the car, taking lap times, cleaning the windshield and helping with both minor and major mechanical repairs whenever something breaks.
If you're interested, respond to me here or email me at jaymarlowe@hotmail.com. I'll be glad to talk with you more about it on the phone or in person. You're welcome to even come by to see the car and/or meet some of the other crew guys if you like- I live in Hendersonville, NC.
We'll be racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway next weekend (June 17 & 18), at Roebling Road (Savannah, Ga) and Road Atlanta in July.
