Good day people. I had about $100 stolen out of my wallet that was in my van during the autocross at ZMax yesterday. Pretty amazing. I have never had a problem in 23 years of autocrossing. Did anyone else have this problem?

I didnt have any problems and had my truck open , tool box open and tools laying loose on the trailer . They must have been just after cash . I was back and forth through there pretty often and didnt see anything . Any idea what time of day it disappeared ? Late when fun runs were going on ?

I was parked next to you and, like Anthony, had no problems.

Thats not good by any means, but Id like to think that it more than likely not an autox'r. But rather a spectator, its ashame that you should have to but I guess you gotta lock it up.

I'm fairly sure I'm not missing any cash. It is such a shock to hear it happened. From Rankins mouth a few years ago, "I could leave my keys in the ignition and a $100 bill on the dash knowing that it won't be touched." I hope these days are behind us. I've left my wallet and expensive watch sitting on the roof of my car for hours and never been touched before, or forget it in grid in the middle of e day and it's untouched when I realize it's still there. Sorry to hear Geoff

Agreed, that's a surprise. Like you, Geoff, I've been at this for years and never lost as much as a screwdriver to theft. But, to be honest, the number of folks I don't know at an autocross is much larger than it once was. Maybe we (the autocross community) need to start watching out for each other a bit more.

I'm shocked to here that. I have been doing this for about 4 years, and locally have not heard of anyone getting anything stolen. Although down in Atlanta and Turner Field you gotta watch your stuff, being in a very public area with homeless nearby. I guess the ghetto may be coming to Charlotte.
Geoff, are you sure you didn't spend the $100 on ball joints and lower control arms?

At the SCR event at Briarcliff Mall, my wife went to the car and found a guy with his head inside my car looking around. She asked if she could help and he walked away. Folks have asked me why I have my card number on everything and it's a lesson I learned from karting. It was to lessen theft. I started doing that after a couple of tires went missing. Maybe having a few people roam the paddock as their work assignment would be a good idea. Potential theives are pretty easy to spot.

We had a set of wheels , a tool box and some other items stolen at Continental at the 24 a few years ago , that was out of the ordinary circumstances though .

Sorry to hear Geoff... most likely spectators. I can't imagine any of our regulars doing that!!
The thefts at Conti were from a group of "street racer" types. They slipped into the paddock area when they had lighting problems and there was no light.
I'm like Rankins, never even gave a second thought to leaving my keys in the ignition (unless Cassino was around) and wallet on the seat.

Credit card? As in, we don't carry cash with us so don't try to steal from us?
I'm grasping at straws here...

Am appalled by this. Like Dean, i have been around this sport many years and never felt the need to "lockup", as i have never lost a wrench or screwdriver. The last event we ran at Eastland, i looked around and did so because of the "spectators" . Like Mike, i hope Geoff remembers he spent the money on gas or strippers. I was parked nearby and did not see suspicious activity. If this is a new trend, i hope we find the culprit. Hope HE OR SHE HAS TIME TO CALL 911.

I hate to say it, but we may be victims of our own success. We've invited everybody and their brothers to come out and Autocross - and many of them are.. It's not just us hard-core fanatics on-site anymore. New faces every time.
We might need a new work assignment: "Paddock safety and security watch".

That's what I was suggesting earlier in this thread, but we would need a to determine how many we would need and the actions we could legally employ to detain someone we catch stealing or attempting to. We can't just escort them out. We would need file charges. I for one have NO problem taking off work and driving from Columbia for testimony. I'm just one of those type of people that I'd rather you cut me than steal from me.

When I was running karts most of the thefts we had were commited by "outlaw" types, which I know sounds snobby, but is is what street racers are. We participate in a legitimate sport. Not an activity that requires a look out to warn when the law is on the way.

This is ridiculous. Do we have any police officers that are regulars?
I think the main concern would be ZMax. It always draws the biggest crowds.
PS: I'm thinking "CC" means crowd control???

The concord police dept was interested in Autox to prep their cops for fast driving. Maybe we can give them free Autox to have their presents known
While looking for Alan's phone last Sunday they were setting up cones and I was like dang you could have came yesterday and saved all the back braking work. They seemed really interested.

I spoke at length with the three concord cops that came by to watch for about 30 minutes. Great guys who were very interested. I told them to go ask for a ride along or take their patrol car out for a fun run! I bet we could convince a CPD to come out to cruise the paddock...

When I wrote this response, I was actually thinking about a "Conceal Carry Present" warning sign at the entry, but that opens up such a can of worms... What is zMAX's policy? Who gets concerned, etc, etc.. We shouldn't over-react to one incident, but we also shouldn't pretend it never happened. 2-3 people carrying radios with bright colored vests labeled "Event Safety/Security".. Roaming the paddock during the Drivers Meeting and during run groups. Just a thought.

We often don't have 2-3 extra workers. Some events we are lucky to have enough people to work course

This is crazy. This is my first year of autox and from day 1 i have felt comfortable and left my windows down, keys in the ignition money in cup holder, Chairs with coolers in your parking spot while running the course etc. Its just amazing. I hate a thief. We should go back to the old days and start cutting off hands of people who steal. Now I want to investigate a little. Did they take the wallet as a whole or just the stuff out of it. reason being usually a someone taking something will just snatch and grab. But someone you know will take what they know is there.

That is a good educated guess. Oh you remember that time my house was broke into when they or he wedged the window open put it back took all my music equipment guns watches games. pretty much everything. And even had the courtesy to lock my door on the way out. (not the deadbolt of course) but the bottom. What a friend to lock my door for me. I should have cut his hand off. The nutsty part is Im not 100% sure that it is who I think it was. only like 95-98%. I repeat my self I HATE A THIEF.
